Many of the dishes served at SAC’s Place are based on the recipes perfected by Anthony and Domenico’s Nonna, in her kitchen back in Abruzzo. In America, Grandma Sacramone’s culinary traditions were carried on by the brothers' loving mom, Maddalena. In many ways, SAC’s Place is a tribute to the strong and talented Sacramone women.

The atmosphere is casual and from the kitchen to your table, the place is very clean. The brothers take care of SAC’s as they would their own home. One of life’s simple pleasures is sitting down to a meal and a glass of wine at SAC’s. If at all possible, try to get a table in the dining area featuring floor-to-ceiling picture windows. Sitting at a table while you savor their pizza, and gaze out at the passers-by on Broadway, is a truly relaxing experience.
Having your meal in climate-controlled comfort is even better than dining outdoors. SAC’s says that the coal oven makes all the difference in the world when it comes to giving their customers a superior pizza. The flavor of the cheese and sauce, as well as the texture of the crust, prove the brothers to be right on point. SAC’s coal oven turns out a really quality pie. The white pie (ricotta, mozzarella and virgin olive oil) is the best in the business. The cheeses are blended just right and the ricotta and mozzarella are creamy but not too heavy on the crust.
Mama’s Old-Fashioned Pie is a tasty blend of hand-cut fresh mozzarella, basil, virgin olive oil and crushed San Marzano tomatoes. SAC’s has every topping you could imagine to dress up your pizza. The spinach pie, however, is a standout. For those who like things spicy, specialty toppings include jalapenos and pickled cherry peppers. The pizza at SAC’s is really hard to stay away from, but when you’re in the mood to change things up, try the baked ziti siciliana, with ricotta and eggplant. For a somewhat lighter dish, order the shrimp scampi in a butter, garlic and white wine sauce.
The kitchen at SAC’s dishes out some sweet finishes with which to top off your meal. The Hot Chocolate Lava Cake has a delightful mousse filling. Ornella is a great place to host a family pasta and fun night out, or the perfect romantic date. There is a customer comfort level here that few restaurants can match. The pizza at Ornella is very reasonably priced and is so very, very good. Onella’s pizza is crafted by Maestro Pizzaiolo, Nunzio Trezza. His pies don’t really need toppings; they are perfect with a simple blend of tomatoes, sauce and cheese. But your Pizzaiolo does have available toppings like grilled chicken, pepperoni, artichokes or green and black olives. The kitchen offers a very special pizza a 2 Piani. Bring plenty of company because this feast consists of two layers of pizza. The bottom later has ricotta cheese, salami, tomato sauce and fresh mozzarella. The pie’s top layer consists of basil, olive oil, more mozzarella and sauce.
Most of their pizza varieties come in regular, small or personal pie size. Whichever size you order, you’ll enjoy Maestro Trezza’s personal touch that turns a basic pizza into culinary magic. In addition to pizza, Ornella has an extensive menu with a multitude of dishes that are not to be missed. The Imbustata is an intriguing dish that you don’t see on too many menus, outside of Italy. Imbustata is oven-baked, envelope-shaped pasta filled with roasted veal, chicken, wild mushrooms, homemade mozzarella, spinach, mascarpone cheese and fresh tomato sauce.
The chefs at Ornella are great at creating some classic meat dishes with their own spin and twist. The succulent pork chop is stuffed with mushrooms, prosciutto and fontina cheese in a yummy madeira sauce. It’s served with pasta. The spaghetti carbonara is made with smoked pancetta, organic eggs, parsley, cracked black pepper and pecorino Romano cheese. If you love soup, then you’ll adore Ornella’s rich and flavorful Straccioatella, which is a blend of chicken broth, pasta and egg. The kitchen's salad selection is infinitely more varied than you would find in most Italian restaurants. Yes, they do a tasty Caesar salad, but be diffferent and ask for the dry Deliza, a salad of field greens, asparagus, beets, goat cheese, cherry tomatoes and oranges in a balsamic reduction.

It’s a clean comfortable place to have a slice or wait while your pie is being prepared and baked to perfection in the oven. The old-school atmosphere is night out of a show like" Happy Days". And that’s a huge plus. The friendly counter guys take pride in what they are doing and it shows when your pizza comes out piping hot. You can’t wait to take it home and enjoy. The pizza has a thin, crispy yet doughy crust, which serves as the foundation for the perfect blend of cheese and tomato sauce.
If you love fresh-cut mozzarella cheese, then go for it! Polito’s gives you a nice layer of mozzarella on all their pies. Their tomato sauce is sweet, hitting just the right note. Thankfully, it does not have that tart, acidic bite to it that some pizza sauces do. No need for Tums after polishing off a Polito’s pie. Tommy Polito and his team also dish out awesome garlic knots and zeppoles. The kitchen's hot and tasty sauces are melt-in-your-mouth goodness, atop fresh crusty Italian bread. You can choose from sausage and peppers, meatballs, eggplant parm and chicken cutlet.
Pasta selections include baked ziti done right, manicotti, spaghetti with marinara sauce and eggplant rollatini with ziti. On the sidewalk, just next to Polito’s entrance, is a refrigerator case containing your dessert. Let the counter guy give you a scoop or two of their authentic, refreshing Italian Ice. Made the traditional way, these are the classic ices your grandparents could not get enough of. The good stuff never goes out of style. Flavors include cherry, chocolate, lemon and rainbow. There is a reason why Polito’s Pizza has become something of a tradition for families all over Astoria. It’s not just one thing. Like a pizza with just the right blend of cheese, sauce, oregano, mushrooms and peppers, many ingredients go into making Polito’s the brand name it has become… great taste, pro service and on-time delivery.
Milkflower - Astoria
Milkflower, a wood-fired pizzeria, may be the new kid on the black, but it takes a back seat to no one when it comes to serving delicious pizza. Occupying a spacious storefront area at 34-12 31st Avenue, Milkflower is upscale but has a casual, unpretentious vibe going for it. At the present, they are open for dinner, Monday through Friday, from 5 PM-11:00 PM. On Saturday and Sunday you can get your pizza brunch on, from 11AM to 11PM. The wood-fired oven turns out pies of a slightly more adventurous, but delicious nature than you might be used to.
Take the Corn on the Hog, a pizza with mozzarella, corn, goat cheese, bacon, lemon and arugula. The Superfly Snuka, named after the legendary pro wrestler, consists of tomato, mozzarella, jalapenos, pineapple and speck. The Chico Vende is a blend of kale, tomato, garlic, breadcrumbs, chili flakes, lemon and Evoo (extra virgin olive oil). For those who want to stick to the tasty classics, Milkflower offers the Queen: tomato, mozzarella cheese, basil and a dusting of parmigaino. Their take on the traditional sausage pie is the Abe Froman.
You will love this blend of tomato, garlic, pork sausage with charred onions and grana padano. The beer selection here is top-shelf.
