Open Door Gastropub -  New York, NY

When you enter the environs of Open Door Gastropub, the theatrical decor makes you feel as though you walked into a Broadway show. The experience starts when you go into the small vestibule and enter through a full-size Victorian door set against the hallway wall. Once inside, the huge, carefully lit bar immediately captures your attention. There are shelves upon shelves of bottles on display. The long wood bar curves around from the entrance all the way to the rear of the pub. The high ceiling gives the pub a very open spacious feeling, and the subdued but effectively eye-catching shade of red decorates sections of the wall.

The bar area has plenty of seating and there is also a cozy dining room where you can enjoy your meal. After work, the Open Door is your Happy Hour destination for fun, great drinks and fantastic, upscale pub fare. Happy Hour takes place, Monday through Friday from 4-7 PM. With the cold weather here, take advantage of their Irish coffee special. It will make you feel good in more ways than one.

The house offers a couple of choices regarding prix fixe deals. The $22 menu gives you soup of the day or house salad. But the Open Bar house salad is a step up from most other pubs' greenery. Their salad consists of watercress, baby arugula, baby spinach, radicchio with red onions and balsamic dressing. Entrées are traditional but improved with the chefs' innovative culinary twists and tweaks. There is corn beef and cabbage, chicken pot pie, fish and chips and shepherd's pie. The kitchen also does a very creative pulled pork sandwich with barbecue sauce, onion, pickle and chili orange aioli on a brioche roll. The eggplant parmesan comes with pesto fettuccine, making for some different but complementary tastes on your plate. The $25 prix fixe offers a choice of French onion soup or shrimp soup of the day. Entrées are mostly different from those offered on the $22 menu. But they are all worth your time. Classic Irish lamb stew, slow roasted pork loin, brisket of beef in a whiskey reduction sauce, roast turkey and roast half chicken with parsley sauce are among the highlights. The $25 menu adds red velvet cake to the desert choices, along with vanilla ice cream or bread pudding with Bailey's caramel sauce. And you also get a cup of coffee or tea.

Do take advantage of the talents of Open Door's mixologists. The theatrical bar is not just for show. It is a proper working environment for guys and gals who are professionals at the craft. At Happy Hour, you can enjoy 2 for 1 wines by the glass or select martinis such as the peartini, the cosmopolitan, the bulldog gin gimlet or a reinvented classic, the dirty martini. The bar also has the best in draft beer, bourbons and ryes, tequilas and of course Irish whiskey. You will not go thirsty here.

Desmond's Steakhouse Restaurant - New York, NY

Over the past few years, with an increased emphasis on setting healthy eating goals, there has been a decrease in the amount of red meat from American consumes. Steakhouses have, all too often, been unfairly stereotyped as establishments serving main courses and side dishes that pack saturated fats.
