Thalassa - TriBeCa, NYC

Thalassa Restaurant in TriBeCa New York, is one of the best Greek restaurants in Manhattan that transcends the neighborhood it's in, while leting you experience the richness of the words "Kali Oreksi" as the Greeks say, have a good appetite.

For more than eight years this upscale and very friendly Greek restaurant has been a neighborhood favorite. The restaurant itself is quite impressive and the classic Greek influence is everywhere. Thalassa is located inside a historic building that at one time served as a warehouse for Greek products, particularly olives and cheeses. Well-respected architect Jean-Pierre Heim turned this industrial space into a visual wonderland. The high ceilings and chic, modern decor strike just the right notes. Take in the social scene around you as you're sipping a cocktail or one of the finest wines from Greece at the long curved bar, made of marble from the island of Thassos.

THALASSA - TRIBECA

Thalassa means "The Sea" in Greek and the chefs here are all about preparing the freshest seafood dishes in a variety of tempting recipes. In addition to locally sourced fish, Thalassa imports seafood directly from Greece, Spain, Portugal and Hawaii. The menu is a medley of delicious choices that are the fisherman's catch of the day. One of the most popular dishes is the Seafood Saganaki which consists of whole shrimp, baby clams and muscles, slowly baked in tomato, feta and Robiola wine sauce. The Main diver scallops are wrapped in Kataifi Filo with sheep's milk butter and a Kalamata balsamic reduction.

Other selections you want to try include grilled octopus from Portugal, Mediterranean fish tacos and the savory seafood bisque that is unmatched anywhere. You can even pick out which cut of fish you prefer at Thalassa's fresh fish market and have it prepared just as they do in the Hellenic homeland: grilled with herbs, giant lima beans and tomato concasse.

The red snapper fillet is grilled with the perfect sear and is accompanied on your plate with asparagus and a balsamic reduction. Thalassa's three-course prix fixe tasting menu is well worth $38. It includes tasty delicacies such as seafood ravioli in a Greek saffron sauce, grilled lamb chops with oven baked lemon potatoes and halibut with broccoli rabe. Dessert choices include a sinfully sweet yogurt martini and a Panna Cotta with caramelized pears.

Classics like Baklava and Galaktobouriko come drizzled with honey and taste as authentic as Yiayia used to make it. On Wednesdays the restaurant offers live music during dinner, and is now open by popular demand for lunch during weekdays. On Sundays, when the restaurant is closed to the public, make Thallassa your own private party venue. The catering and special events manager will help you design a memorable event in one of their private rooms.
