Best Brunch Plates in Astoria, NY

When it comes to brunch, savvy Astoria foodies really know their stuff.

A diverse and hard working community, Astoria residents value their downtime and weekend brunch while giving them time to re-connect with friends and family.

Astoria's foodies know what's good. They recognize a great brunch when they see (and taste) it. For years, Astoria residents have been introducing friends who live in Brooklyn and Manhattan to their favorite brunch spots, from Broadway and 30th Avenue to Ditmars Blvd. In Astoria, brunch is so much more than just a couple of nondescript eggs, a bland stack of pancakes or overdone French toast. Astoria does brunch with flair!

Astoria's talented, young chefs have been known to come up with some truly amazing, Instagram-worthy brunch dishes. Come, taste the Astoria difference and you'll agree that doing brunch in our neighborhood is something quite special. Here is an introduction to a few hidden gems as well as some long-established brunch spots.

Madame Sousou - Astoria

Tucked away on a quiet side street just off of 31st Avenue, Madame Sousou has long been considered to be one of the neighborhood's hidden gems. But the secret is out now. This warm, cozy quaint cafe is the place to meet up with your friends for a unique and tasty brunch.

MadameSousou 1

Madame Sousou's dark wood interior, rustic decor and furniture calls to mind a small, friendly cafe in the French countryside. The menu serves to accentuate the decidedly Gallic charm of this establishment.

Whether you choose to  enjoy your brunch inside or sit at a table outdoors (as they do in France), you'll find Madame Sousou to be a relaxing escape from the noise and crowd scenes of a typical New York day.

The team behind Madame Sousou takes great pride in the quality of their cooking and careful choice of ingredients.

This cafe is one of the few brunch places in Astoria that features the QUICHE as a focal point of their menu. All of their Quiches are homemade, with the pie and all of the scrumptious fillings being made from scratch, each and every day. They use organic vegetables and eggs, real heavy cream and Gruyere cheese.

MadameSousou 2

Quiche selections change from day to day, but some of their most popular items are the Mushroom and Leek option, the Zucchini and Gruyere cheese Quiche and the vegetable Goat cheese Quiche.

A savory soup goes great with either Madame Sousou's quiche or one of their tasty sandwich selections. The chef uses market fresh meats and veggies as well as  made from scratch stocks in his soups. And as the chef here likes to say, a  little love and imagination, as well. This dedication to quality and care shows up in every bite.

House made soups (Like Grandma used to make for the family), range from Ginger carrot, cream of Asparagus, Butternut Squash, a hearty Beef Barley and Mediterranean Lentil to a traditional and flavor-packed Chicken Noodle.

Breakfast and Brunch sweets are supplied fresh every day by the local, LIC based  Doughnut Plant and by Balthazar Bakery. Coffee is always fresh and eye opening. Every cup is supplied with passion by Italy's favorite coffee brand, Lavazza.

Madame Sousou has a small kitchen nestled away towards the back of the cafe, but it turns out so many good things. Yes, they do bake their own cakes! The regular customers are enamored of Madame Sousou's Cheesecake, Cranberry Pound cake, Pistachio cake, Banana Nut pound cake and their signature item, a delicious Carrot Cake.

Every slice is a delight. The carrot cake is very mildly spiced and contains real carrot bits and pecans. The to-die-for frosting is made from cream cheese. Need we say more?

Sanford's Restaurant - Astoria

Everything old is new again at the absolutely gorgeous, recently, remodeled Sanford's Restaurant. The decor is sleek and modern, with a warm and chic ambiance. One of Astoria's most celebrated Diners, Sanford's remains true to tradition in the ways that count, great food at reasonable prices together with superior customer service.

Part of the restaurant's charm is the way in which the decorators managed to salvage portions of the old interior, blending them in with the  updated lighting, furnishings and walls.

Sanfords 1

Gus Karalekas, who, along with his brothers John and Chris, owns Sanford's,  is fond of saying "There is no limit to what a person can achieve, as long as he or she doesn't mind who gets the credit." Spoken like a true leader and that's exactly what Gus is. He leads the Sanford's team of chefs, waiters, bus guys and gals and delivery pros, by example.

Gus' passion for providing his neighbors in Astoria with a memorable dining experience is evident in everything that he does. It seems as though, Gus is at Sanford's morning, noon and night.

Brunch is served  Monday through Sunday, between the hours of 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM. Customers  have their choice of Champagne (a Sanford's touch; who else does this?), Kir Royale, Bloody Mary, a Screwdriver or Fresh squeezed juice. Plus, you may also have a hot beverage with your brunch, coffee, tea or Cocoa.

Along with the visual appearance of the restaurant; the kitchen itself has been reinvented.

The Prix-Fix Brunch menu has almost thirty selections to choose from. Brunch traditionalists will love the Corned Beef Hash Eggs Benedict, the Waffle Medley with blueberries, strawberries and bananas as well as their perfectly prepared eggs any style with a choice of cherry wood smoked  ham, bacon, turkey sausage or pork sausage.

Sanfords 2

The foodies among us (you know who you are), will adore  the Gouda stuffed Duck burger, Chicken Schnitzel (with heirloom tomato and onion salad, Kaseri cheese and a fried egg), a pepper jack topped Bistro Burger, the addicting Nutella Smores Waffle and Sanford's signature Falafel Wrap with avocado, mozzarella cheese and pesto aioli.

From the mouth watering food that decorates your plate to the warm smile from your server, it's all good at Sanford's.

The Bonnie - Astoria

The Bonnie is exactly what a good, solid neighborhood gastro pub should be; warm and welcoming, a comfortable place to have a pint and enjoy unpretentious and well-prepared food.

The brick walls and reclaimed wood that surrounds you, creates a rustic, cozy atmosphere. Don't plan on going to the movies after having a drink and dinner here, because, once you're caught up in The Bonnie experience; you will want to stay awhile. If you were brunching at a pub in Dublin or London, you couldn't  ask for a more genuine  ambiance.

TheBonnie 2

Conversation with friendly neighbors at the bar or at the next table flows easily here, as do the drinks. Many of the cocktails are infused with natural herbs. They are all delicious.

Brunch at the Bonnie is a wonderful way to kick off the weekend. The Brunch menu features such customer faves as the signature Baked Egg in tomato sauce skillet, The grilled Pork Chops and Waffles, a really good fried Oyster sandwich, a classic steak and eggs plate as well as smashed avocado toast.

The Breakfast burger comes topped with bacon jam, a fried egg, lettuce, tomato and pickles. We'll have you know that these are not just any old pickles. They are Beer battered and supplied by McClures' Pickles of Brooklyn. McClures' is the last word when it comes to pickles, sweet or sour.

TheBonnie 1

The owners here pay attention to every little detail. In the food and hospitality business that creates a winning formula. That's the reason why The Bonnie has made such a huge impact in Ditmars, in such a short time.
