Barbara Rubin Academic Coach

- A Calm and Steady Hand Guiding Your Child's Future.

During these tumultuous times that we're living in, New Yorkers need all the help that they can get. Yes, we are New York tough and pride ourselves on being a self-reliant bunch.

However, a kind word here, a compassionate gesture there, goes a long way towards easing the stress brought about by Covid-19. When strangers in the same community start looking out for each other, the word "neighbor" takes on a whole new meaning.

This holds especially true if you're a parent. Being a mom or dad has never been easy, even in the best of times.

But, with families being quarantined together for months on end, the job of raising a child has become exponentially harder.

In addition to all of their other duties, parents have been forced to become "substitute teachers" as their kids grapple with virtual learning and the uncertainty of in-person classes. Everything is in a state of flux.

And, when it comes time for the student in your life to put together a game plan to apply for college; well, the pressure on everyone concerned just kicked into high gear. The clock is ticking and you're wondering just what to do!

But, thankfully, all is not lost. You are not alone on this long and winding road.

Helping her clients become "unstuck" is what Barb does best. Working alongside Barbara, your child will be encouraged to get out of their comfort zone, explore new things

and, above all, find their passion in life.

Barb's academic coaching practice is all about YOU... going from where you are in life to where you want to be!

Barbara's initial consultation is complimentary, involving both parents and the student.

For the time being, due to the COVID crisis, Barbara will not be available for in-person visits at her office.

You can always connect with her, though, by phone, Skype, Facetime, Zoom and Google.

Warm and personable, yet someone, who knows how to set a plan and keep your child loyal to it; Barb serves every community in the New York Metropolitan area including the beautiful and serene Hudson Valley.

A motivator and goal-setter, Barb provides the one-on-one coaching that overwhelmed teachers and guidance counselors simply cannot, particularly nowadays.

Working with children and teenagers, Barbara instills a renewed sense of self-confidence and empowerment in her clients.

Leading by example, Barb's coaching style is tailored to the real world. She is a natural-born mentor.

And her credentials are impeccable. Barbara holds a Master of Science in Elementary Education (Kappa Delta Pi ), in addition to a Bachelor of Arts in History with a Certification in Secondary Education (Phi Alpha Theta) from Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, New York.

After an outstanding twenty-one year career as an educator AND professional developer of teachers, Barbara was looking to change things up a bit; always on the lookout for a new challenge in life. She still wanted to work and make a difference in people's lives; especially kids and teenagers.

In September of 2016, Barbara entered New York University's School of Professional Studies, earning an Advanced Diploma in Coaching.

This was soon followed by an Advanced Certificate in Educational Leadership from Long Island University.

As a teacher in the Newburgh school system, Barbara did not believe in "spoon-feeding" her students. In her classroom, it was all about ENGAGEMENT; facilitating debates along with some very solid hands-on learning.

Barb brings this approach to her Academic Coaching, allowing students to participate and learn on their own schedules. Barb feels that life coaching is a critical aspect of her professional practice as it encourages the student to learn how to make positive choices in life and self-motivated.

When you and your student get ready to first meet with Barbara, don't worry too much about preparing anything or thinking too hard about what you are going to say.

Just be ready to share. In other words, just be yourself. Barb will take it from there.

An optimist who genuinely believes that one person can change the world,

one of Barbara's favorite quotes is from the immortal Gandhi; "BE the change that you wish to see in the world."

Barb's process involves getting to know both parent and child. What are their mutual goals for the future in terms of choice of college and career? What are the conflicts within the family and how can they be resolved?

She can act as a bridge, bringing families even closer together as they make vital, life-changing decisions.

After holding a joint session with the student and his or her parents, Barb will then have an individual session with each party.

"I always tell my clients that one of the best things that coaching teaches you is that life is a balance. It's so important to work and play, especially during these difficult times we are living in." advised Barbara.

Barb can help a student uncover a passion that will help him or her decide on their High School major and eventual choice of college.

In helping a family develop a plan for college, Barb may first have to address the student's grades.

A master motivator, Barb worked wonders in the Newburgh school system, achieving a high rate of success with her students.

That having been said, a stint at a local community college may be the best solution for certain students. This option provides a young adult additional time to rebound academically and discover their true career path.

"Two things here are of the utmost importance", said Barbara. " There are no stigmas regarding two-year colleges. Also, if a kid has a particular talent and loves welding, car repair, anything that is "hands-on", it's perfectly okay to explore those possibilities as well. There are a number of schools that address these potential careers ."

Barb also has a gift for diffusing any tension that she may encounter within the family

regarding academic performance and where to go to college or, sometimes, whether to go at all.

" Sessions with parents are critical," explained Barbara. " Dad might be a lawyer and want the kid to be in the family practice. But if the student is really passionate about science then that's the path the child should follow; or, perhaps look into becoming an attorney whose specialty is environmental law. It's truly the art of compromise."

The secret sauce here is that Barb is a tremendous listener. For an academic coach to do their job to the best of their ability it's important to process exactly what their clients are telling them , sometimes even having to read between the lines.

With BARBARA RUBIN ACADEMIC COACHING, your family will NEVER be left alone.

Barb will schedule follow-up sessions to see just how you're doing. She will assess the student's academic progress and decision-making towards stated objectives and goals.

If there are any tweaks or adjustments that need to be made, Barb will be on top of it, offering sage counsel, a witty pun here and there and a whole lot of tender loving care.

And remember, as Barb likes to remind her students, learning doesn't stop at graduation.

That's why your academic coach will be available, if needed, to ease the transition from High School to College.

Once you've been accepted by the college of your choice, there's a ton of things to think about from adapting to on-campus life and your roommate to all of the new social distancing rules that will affect your overall experience.

Barb has actually BEEN in your shoes, as a student who wasn't sure exactly WHAT life held for her career-wise. She GETS IT!

Barb, in short, has a knack for making people feel comfortable and at ease while also telling them what they might not WANT to hear, but NEED to hear. It can be a fine line, but Barb strides it like an accomplished tight-rope walker.

With Covid-19 and all of the million and one thing that are on your plate as a parent and student, doesn't it make sense to bring in an outside voice who can do some of the heavy liftings for you, in terms of counseling, research, and motivation?

" My goal here is simple. I want to help people," firmly stated Barbara. "My academic coaching is a continuation of what I did for more than two decades. I will never, ever stop being a teacher. It has been and always will be a part of me."

Get "unstuck" and spring forward on the fast track to a brighter future with BARBARA RUBIN ACADEMIC COACHING!
