Express your inner artist and have a ton of fun drawing and painting while also getting to know some of the rising stars on NYC's art scene.
The Holidays are always a busy time of year. And now that we can, once again, gather with friends and family, after missing out last year, the Holiday season means more than ever before. It truly is the most wonderful time of the year!
Thankfully, there is no shortage of things to do with locations such as the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree and Bryant Park's amazing Winter Village open to one and all.
However, closer to home, there is one event that you surely must check out; the
the debut of The Astoria Holiday Art Market, which takes place on December 17th, 18th and 19th at LiveOne.TV's studio space.
Located at 35-12 Astoria Blvd. LiveOne.TV is conveniently located just a short stroll down from Astoria Blvd. N and W train station.
Gather your family and friends together and make plans to attend. Admission is by donation and starts at only $1 per person. And get this; 50% of all ticket proceeds will go to Mount Sinai Hospital of Queens to help provide a better quality of service to the local community.
Don't wait! Tickets can be purchased in advance at :
Naturally, you can also buy a ticket at the door. But, due to safety and comfort protocols, there can only be about 40 people in the art gallery space at any one time. So, it's best to go to Eventbrite and reserve the day and time when you would like to attend.
The event has been organized by renowned Astoria-based artist Sophocles Plokamakis. We're sure that you are already familiar with Sophocles as he was featured in an Aplez.com profile not too long ago!
In tandem with his wife Thais, a talented painter in her own right, Sophocles is producing the Astoria Holiday Art Market under the aegis of their company Start Shows, which is dedicated to creating gallery showings for artists throughout the city.
Ian Snow Carpenter, the founder of Liveone.tv is very graciously allowing Sophocles and Thais to use his space for this very special event.
Not only will you be able to have a meet and greet with the amazing line-up of artists, the Astoria Holiday Art Market is an interactive experience, as well.
There will be a large table set up in the middle of the gallery space where various
materials will be available for YOU to draw and color to your heart's content.
Sophocles will have copies of his black and white comic book Farmboy, ready for you to color in the pages using complimentary Crayola markers and Prisma Premier multi-colored pencils. There will also be reams of quality 11x17 inch paper on hand so that you can draw and paint whatever you wish. Just be sure to bring your imagination to the Holiday Art Market.
It'll be loads of fun! Draw and color besides your kids or together with your significant other. If you're flying solo; no problem. Engage with some of your fellow guests about what to draw. That's a great conversation starter. Who knows? You might just connect with a fellow art-lover and make a new friend.
At the market, you'll be able to get a nice amount of Holiday shopping done. The diverse array of artists who Sophocles has invited to appear will have some of their most recent work available for purchase.
And, you will also be able to discuss commissioning a painting or other artwork to enhance the ambiance of your apartment or office.
One of the luminaries who will be appearing at the market is Thais Coelho
Originally from Brazil, Thais has studied art in both London and Paris, winning an award for her art in Brazil. Thais specializes in the use of acrylic paint on canvas to create portraits and landscapes in an expressionist style that's extremely colorful.
Thais moved to NYC in 2018 after accepting an invitation to be part of "September Fest", an art exhibition that was held at One Art Space in TriBeCa. It was here that Thais met her future husband Sophocles Plokamakis.
Though, as artists, their styles are quite different, Thais and her husband share a belief that art can serve as a means of emotional self-expression and a way to connect with people from different cultures. Art, like music, has no boundaries and is a kind of universal language.
Keep an eye out for an upcoming art-centric podcast that will be hosted by Thais and Sophocles.
At the market, urban landscape painter and artistic trail-blazer Klay-James Enos will be happy to discuss his work with you as will Carlos Bonilla, the man who brings feelings and human expressions to life with his art.
They will be joined by MJ Harrattan, an artist who was born with the gift to create.
In fact, MJ's earliest memories were of his mother putting paper and crayons in his hand and encouraging her son to draw while they watched celebrated artist Bob Ross on the TV.
You can check out the above artists' work in advance of the market at their respective websites and Instagrams. It will be well worth your time.
