Astoria's Cool Coffee Bars - New York

Astoria's Cool Coffee Bars - New York

Hot and iced brews are designed to get you through life's daily grind.

Known for its diverse selection of trendy bars and diverse restaurants,

Astoria's cafe scene isn't too shabby either.

It seems as though there's a coffee cafe on just about every block or so. To those local, bleary-eyed commuters who are on their way to work or are just seeking a caffeine boost to get through the day, these havens of java are a welcome sight indeed. As far as most Astorians are concerned, there really CAN'T be too many of them.

In NYC we do love our coffee, whether it be piping hot or iced. However, with the chill of Fall already in the air, a steaming cup of Joe is just what the doctor ordered for those who have to venture out to work at the crack of dawn.

Coffee is the brew that helps you face the day ahead. And it's been working its magic for centuries.

None other than Captain John Smith introduced coffee to the settlers of Jamestown Virginia, back in 1607. The good captain first learned about this rather exotic beverage on his travels to Turkey.

Coffee gradually gained in popularity until, one fine day, it replaced tea as the favorite hot drink of Americans. But, worry not, all of you tea drinkers out there in the Aplez.com universe.

Many of the coffee shops in and around Astoria also carry a superb selection of hot herbal teas that will soothe your soul. It just depends on what you're in the mood for.

As we all know, variety is the spice of life. So, why not do both; energize your

AM hours with a cup of coffee and enjoy a spot of afternoon tea to get you through the homestretch until work ends for the day.

Under Pressure Coffee Bar - Astoria

With sleek, modern decor and a very cool vibe, Under Pressure is a European-style espresso bar. Yes, Under pressure may be located in the shadow of the N and W elevated train tracks. But, it would not be out of place in Milan or Rome in terms of service, quality of coffee and overall " fashion" sense.

There's some nice outdoor seating where you can sit back, sip a brew and converse with friends or simply work on your iPhone or laptop. Either way, you will leave feeling that all's right with the world; no matter what mood you were in before entering Under Pressure.

The good folks behind this cafe have a real feel for customer service and they certainly know their coffee. All coffee is roasted in-house so you can be assured of the freshest cup. And, the baristas will be only too happy to answer any questions you may have about what's going into your cup.

As an added plus, they are open until eight so you can stop by on your way home from work and grab a cup of java as well as one of their delightful Greek pastries including one of the best spinach pies in the neighborhood.

At Under Pressure, you will find coffee from around the world. Come by and discover your new favorite roast.

The Brazilian Blend is just slightly sweet with enticing notes of orange spice, cocoa and creme Brulee.

A bit stronger is the Colombia Supremo with cupping notes of strawberries and cream with a luscious dark chocolate finish.

The Ethiopian Decaf is a fully washed coffee from Wote Konga in the Yirgacheffe region of Ethiopia. Cultivated by local small farmers in a collective, these beans are grown at an imposing height of 1,800 to 2,000 feet.

Under Pressure also sells some very nice coffee-making accessories. And they ship their coffee beans, not only across NYC but all over the globe. hey, you can make a cup in the comfort of your home.

The Barn Coffee Shop - Astoria

Convenient for busy commuters who are on their way to catch the N or W train at Astoria Blvd. Station The Barn also works as a weekend brunch destination where you can enjoy a great cup of coffee along with some delicious food.

Astoria Park, by the way, is not too far away so it might be a great idea to pick up some coffee and one of The Barn's fantastic sandwiches or pastries and have an informal picnic.

You'll know that you are in the right place courtesy of the bright red and black striped awning that overhangs the entrance.

Once inside, you'll be greeted by one of the super-friendly baristas or, perhaps, one of the owners Maria Ramos and Eric Gonzalez. Your comfort and satisfaction are their utmost concern. Husband and wife, Maria and Eric came together out of their love of coffee and hospitality. Their goal in opening the business was to make The barn just a little bit different from the average neighborhood coffee shop. They have succeeded beyond their wildest dreams.

The vibe is very welcoming. The team here treats you as though you were guests in their home. No wonder The Barn's motto is "All you need is love... and coffee!"

The Barn's semi-enclosed outdoor seating space is one of the most beautiful of its kind anywhere in Astoria. The walls are decorated with some very cool psychedelic Sixties-type art together with acoustic guitars and lush, green plants.

There are also a few seats inside by the window which is great for people-watching.

You can't go wrong with the coffee. It rocks! The menu features everything from drip and cold brew java to cortados, lattes, mochas and, for those who REALLY need a lift, a double espresso.

But, The barn is about so much more than coffee, addicting though it is. They have a tea bar that offers a dozen or so different varieties of tea, ranging from ginger lemongrass and organic herbal peppermint tea to traditional English breakfast tea.

Smoothies are also available. The Day Dreaming Smoothie will totally make your day with healthy ingredients like bananas, fresh-squeezed orange juice, strawberries and almond milk.

A nice dollop of Greek yogurt is the star of the Tropical Breeze Smoothie, whose supporting cast includes OJ, pineapple juice, honey and bananas.

When it comes to food, Maria, Eric and their staff have got you covered from breakfast through lunch. One of their most popular items is the overnight oats cup with almond milk. The fresh-made blueberry and chocolate chip scones are just made for dunking in your coffee.

Make sure that you check out the delectable peanut butter, jelly and sliced banana "sandwich" on a croissant. It is outstanding.

Lunch-time faves include avocado toast which is topped with a hard-boiled egg, slices of heirloom tomatoes, sweet corn and radish.

You simply HAVE to try the V.E.C.A. which consists of vegan bacon, a vegan egg and vegan cheddar plus an avocado smash, all on rustic ( what else, but vegan bread ), topped with vegan mayo. The taste is out of sight!

The menu also highlights a smokey tuna melt and their signature chicken salad sandwich.

From time to time, The Barn offers live music on Saturdays. Local talents such as guitarist Tomoya Ogawa, saxophonist Evan Hamaguchi, bassist Trevor Robertson and singer Meg Johnston have all performed here.

Cafe Renis - Astoria

With comfy chairs and sofas strategically placed throughout the premises and an eye-catching color scheme that is Instagram-worthy, Cafe Renis resembles more of a trendy lounge than a coffee spot. It's spacious yet has an intimate feel.

In short, Cafe Renis is the kind of place where you look forward to spending some quality time. Sure, you can grab and go, if you are busy with errands or heading out to work. But, if at all possible, don't deny yourself the pleasure of enjoying a cup of coffee within these environs.

For those who love being outside, please take note: Cafe Renis has, not one, but TWO outdoor spaces. Out front, there is a sidewalk cafe set up with a few tables and chairs. However, the real masterpiece of ambiance can be found in the rear of the establishment, a covered "garden" room that brings the outdoors inside, almost like a sunroom.

This cozy space is adorned with artwork and lots of greenery. It's so very Zen. You will just feel the stress melt away.

The owners like to modestly say that Cafe Renis is the Astoria cafe that you'll never want to leave. They might be right! It's a coffee shop that you can call your very own.

There are even a ton of power outlets so you can keep your devices fully caffeinated.

Your coffee is freshly brewed using Stumptown Roasters' premium coffee beans.

cafe renis

Cafe Renis' "house" coffee is Stumptown's delicious Holler Mountain organic blend. Brewed in small batches, this aromatic cup of coffee has unexpected but pleasant notes of citrus, berry and creamy caramel.

Artfully designed drinks include Americanos, Cappuccinos, Cortados and, it may not be coffee but it is damn good; a rich, indulgent hot chocolate.

Not to be missed is the Cafe Au Lait; their house-brewed coffee topped with foamed milk.

Nibbles range from almond and chocolate croissants to macaroons.

OK Cafe - Astoria

This cute and cozy family-owned cafe has been percolating since 2014. It never really gets old or boring at OK Cafe since they are always innovating and bringing new coffee and tea drinks as well as mouth-watering food options onto the menu.

The husband and wife team of Predrag and Giselle Grncarski both fell in love with Astoria years and years ago and decided to make it their home. Along with their two daughters, the Grncarskis actually live not too far from the shop.

Originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota, Giselle shares a love of coffee with Predrag, who immigrated here from Belgrade. They are very entrepreneurial in nature and had wanted to open their own business for the longest time. After a couple of false starts, Predrag and Giselle found a space that called to them, on 33rd street in Ditmars and OK Cafe was

born!

Featuring Counter Culture Coffee, OK Cafe's drink list is diverse, to say the least. If you can conjure up a coffee ( or even tea ) based concoction in your imagination, you'll most likely find it on their menu.

They do a wonderful New Orleans French press coffee as well as a classic mocha, a Mexican spiced mocha and, get this, a Nutella latte. Available are three different kinds of turmeric lattes, which can be made with or without coffee.

One of their most in-demand drinks is the very special Kyoto cold brew coffee. It takes 14 hours to brew and has a most unique smokey flavour. This pot of coffee sells out early. it is not on the chalkboard menu so you have to ask for it.

If you're hungry, you have come to the right place. The Predrag's food menu is as creative and enticing as its hot and cold beverages.

For a quick nosh on the run, you cannot go wrong with the mini frittata sandwich which consists of a baked egg, scallions and cheddar cheese. There's also the super frittata breakfast croissant, filled with a devilishly good red pepper spread, baked eggs, ham and cheese. it will satisfy any appetite.

Quiche lovers alert ! Every day, Giselle turns out either broccoli and cheddar quiche or divine goat cheese with herbs option. try them both.

Do you like pastries? They've got danishes and muffins galore in addition to vegan and gluten-free items, outrageous banana bread, brownies and chocolate chip cookies.
