Sugarcube Dessert & Coffee in LIC offers high-quality pastry sandwiches and coffee. Sugarcube in LIC is using 3D printed pastry in a fusion of architecture and pastry.

The early days of Spring brought a breath of fresh air to the LIC scene with the opening of Sugar Cube , a bakery and café that defies the imagination.

Despite all of the fine culinary choices that are available to LIC residents, the one thing that's been missing from the neighborhood is a world-class bakery and café. Until now. That glaring omission has been corrected thanks to the efforts of architect Peter Zaharatos. Unique and interesting doesn't even begin to describe the décor and edible treasures that are on display here. The interior of the shop was designed by Peter, who has achieved quite an enviable reputation as a much sought after architect. Recently, Peter was part of the team that designed the new police academy in College Point.

As you might expect, the interior of Sugarcube is ultra modern in design and appearance. If the Starship Enterprise had an in-house café and bakery, Sugarcube would be it! But despite the abstract planes and angles architecture and minimalist color scheme, (mostly white), the place doesn't feel cold or impersonal at all. Peter, along with his friendly staff, provides a warm and genuine neighborhood vibe. They are more than happy to explain the different desserts and give you a sample.

The various gelatos and pastries that are on display give the shop a much needed splash of color. Sugar Cube is a café and bakery in the tradition of the Greek and Italian coffee bars and cafes. Peter wants Sugar Cube to be a place where local residents can gather and talk over a coffee, pastry or cup of creamy smooth gelato. Looking for a cool date spot? Well, you've found your aphrodisiac ambiance within the  walls of Sugar Cube.

Most of the desserts on the menu are made in various geometric designs and shapes including their signature "cube". Peter creates molds for his chocolate treats, some of which incorporate imported Greek pistachios and sour cherries, using a 3-D printer. No, this is not the kind of bakery you were used to going to, when you were growing up. And that's why Sugarcube is so much fun. To help bring his vision of what a bakery should be to reality, Peter has enlisted the help of celebrated pastry wizard Mauricio Santelice.

During the course of a very successful careen, as one of the city's leading pastry and dessert chefs, Mauricio has seen and done it all. Mauricio has appeared on the Food Network where he won a dessert competition. He has also designed the dessert menus at several upscale NYC hotels and restaurants. Chef Mauricio's greatest claim-to-fame is as the creator of the Don Huevo, which is actually two desserts in one. The chef's very innovative sweet treat consists of a chocolate egg that "opens up" after warm caramel sauce is poured over it. The big reveal is a miniature chocolate cake that is topped with ice cream. It is amazing to look at and delicious to taste.

All desserts and pastries are, of course, made in-house. Sugarcube's most popular items include their Greek coffee tart, the chocolate mousse cube, fruit filled bonbons, Greek style pistachio and butter cream eclairs, strawberry shortcake as well as a very tempting tiramisu. Morning glory delights include a variety of muffins, croissants, scones and Greek vegan cookies. Peter has a full line of coffees, espresso and teas to get your morning off to the right start. But remember that coffee isn't just for the morning. Stop by for a seductive pastry and cup of espresso to cap off your evening and relax.

With the advent of warmer weather just on the horizon, everyone is in the mood for ice cream. Well, Sugarcube has a veritable rainbow of flavors that you will enjoy. Flavors range from strawberry and chocolate to olive oil mascarpone, roasted pistachio and salty caramel. Sorbet selections include lime, passion fruit and mandarin orange.

Peter and Mauricio will be making some additions to their pastry and gelato menu on a regular basis. they want to see just what the neighborhood likes as well as have the chance to try out some new but taste-tempting flavors. One thing is for certain. You will never get bored eating  at Sugarcube.

I'VE BEEN TO ITALY AND IT'S NOT AS GOOD AS THIS

This place has the best gelato in LIC, even better than Manducati's Rustica! I just found them last week right off the 7 train at Vernon Blvd. The place is beautiful and I will go there a few times a week now that I know they exist..

Excellent gelato

Probably the best gelato in LIC, even better than Manducati's Rustica in my opinion! I just found them last week right off the 7 train at Vernon Blvd. This is a really nice place as well. Been there 3 time already since last week. Just great favors that make it impossible to stay away when I am in the area.
