Thalassa - TriBeCa, NYC. Thalassa Restaurant in Manhattan is one of those unique restaurants that transcends the neighborhood it's in. For more than eight years, this upscale culinary hotspot has been serving the freshest Greek seafood and delicacies you'll find anywhere in New York City.

The restaurant itself is quite impressive as well. Once an industrial space, it is now transformed into a visual wonderland. Thalassa features high ceilings, chic, modern decor, a long curved bar made of marble from the island of Thassos, imported Argos pottery and handmade wooden tables courtesy of Mykonos's best craftsman! Together with a 40-foot long wine room and the climate controlled wine and cheese cave, you'll know you've come to the right place whether it's the bars' social scene, prix fixe dinner, lunch or special event. Kali Oreksi!

The Greeks say it best "Apolafse ti zoi" which means enjoy life! And the very best place to do that, whether you are Greek or not, is Thalassa Restaurant.

Located in the heart of trendy Tribeca, Thalassa Restaurant features fresh seafood, imported Greek cheeses, evoo, olives and wine as well as organic produce. Not to mention an upscale but relaxing Mediterranean ambiance that will transport you to the Greek Islands. In the Greek language, Thalassa means the sea and there is a distinct nautical theme running throughout the restaurant.  Talk about being authentic. But, then again, Greece is all about cloudless blue skies, the crystal blue Mediterranean sea, fresh fish and the celebration of life! As you walk through the restaurant's many rooms ( including a  climate controlled wine and cheese cave), you'll see a chic curved bar that is fashioned out of marble from the island of Thasos, handcrafted wooden tables and ancient Hellenic vases and pottery.

Now, that's a visual feast, bar none. But the chefs here at Thalassa specialize in catering to all of your senses. One quick taste of any of their delightful dishes and you'll know why. The fish here is from both trusted local purveyors and is also imported from the Greek Islands. The catch of the day is flown in and arrives at Thalassa within twenty-four hours of being caught. Appetizer courses range from fish tacos,  cod with roasted beets, grape leaves stuffed with veal, rice and avgolemono sauce, Maine scallops and their signature seafood sausage. Made in-house, this very tasty sausage is made from shrimps, scallops and lavraki. You could, if you wanted to, almost make a meal out of their selection of artisanal cheeses. All you need is a hunk of bread and a slab or two of  Haloumi, Graviera, Kaseri or Greek feta.

Meze or small plate options include Veal meatballs, shrimp youvetsi with orzo pasta, fire roasted lamb chops and spinach pie triangles. The three "from the sea" menu selections that you simply must try are the red snapper fillet, grilled swordfish and the Seafood Thalassina, which consists of gulf shrimp, scallops, PEI Mussels, lobster, steamed in a white wine sauce. Thalassa has received rave reviews from such respected media outlets as The Wall Street Journal, Food Network Magazine, the Wine Spectator and Zagat. But the reviews that the management and staff at Thalassa hold most dear to their heart are from you, the happy and satisfied customer. And with all of the referrals and recommendations this restaurant receives, it seems like there are a LOT of  Thalassa fans out there.

Head over to Thalassa Restaurant, a little bit of Greece in the heart of Tribeca, NYC, in order to sample genuine Greek warmth and hospitality, as well as some of the best seafood dishes this side of the Aegean islands. The moment that Tasso, Thalassa's genial and cosmopolitan host and manager, greets you and shows you to your table, you'll know that you are in for a very special evening. The bar area, which has a nautical theme, is striking and quite impressive. You will be seated in the gorgeous main dining room, which is just off the sleek and majestic bar. The room is almost theatrical in its grandeur.

In addition to the dining room, Thalassa has two other beautifully decorated rooms, which are perfect for unforgettable family celebrations, Weddings, or office parties. The menu's primary focus is, of course, seafood. But there is a plate or Meze for everybody at Thalassa.

First-course selections include a grilled octopus, imported from Portugal (best there is), perfectly dressed with a touch of olive oil, red wine vinaigrette and served with micro-organic greens. The Zucchini and Eggplant chips are a signature appetizer here and they are to-die-for. The chips are served with tzatziki sauce and saganaki graviera cheese!

The Sea Scallops are cooked just right, with a perfect sear on them. What makes these scallops the hit that they are with Thalassa's enthusiastic regulars; is the fact that the fish is in a light coating of kataifi filo and is cooked in sheep's milk butter and a Kalamata balsamic reduction. The kitchen at Thalassa never overpowers your meat or fish with sauces or reductions. These savory reductions serve only to complement your dish.

Fresh fish selections include Grilled swordfish, Red Snapper, King Langoustines (from New Zealand), Dover Sole, Striped Bass, as well as Lavraki and Lethrini fish, direct from the waters of Greece. Don't think that you will go hungry at Thalassa if you happen to be a meat-lover. Their Filet Mignon, accompanied by oyster mushrooms, haricots verts and fingerling potatoes, literally melts in your mouth. The Greek people know a thing or two about how to cook Lamb. At Thalassa, the Lamb Shank is a standout dish. Your Lamb is braised in St. George wine sauce. It comes with a side of lemon potatoes. Keftes is Greek for meatballs. At Thalassa, they do a savory Veal Keftes, which many foodies find to be a lighter version of the classic Italian Beef style of meatballs.

If you have any room left, so please indulge in one of the kitchen's desserts. The Baklava is covered in homemade syrup, with toasted walnuts and almonds. The oh-so-popular Galaktobouriko is citrus custard wrapped-up in Filo dough and drizzled with orange honey. Very fresh and very flavorful.

Thalassa is an upscale experience, without being expensive at all. If Tasso allowed the staff to put on any airs, his Greek Ya-Ya would no doubt have a word with him. Dining at Thalassa is truly the next best thing to having lunch or dinner at a seaside taverna on one of the Greek islands.

Thalassa Restaurant in TriBeCa, NYC. One of the most authentic Greek restaurants, Thalassa NYC, was once used as a warehouse for Greek olives and cheeses. The space (designed by renowned architect Jean-Pierre Heim) is now one of the most authentic Greek eateries in New York City.

Thalassa...which means "the sea" in Greek...features a chic curved bar made of marble from the island of Thasos, original exposed brick, flower-filled urns from Tripoli, and handmade Iroko wooden tables from Mykonos. A forty-foot-long wine room leads to a climate-controlled wine and cheese cave that houses more than 2,500 wines, including rare boutique finds from Greece.

Thalassa has become the destination spot for hosting private events. We have two beautiful private rooms that can accommodate social or corporate events from 20 to 200. We have hosted many weddings, rehearsal dinners and other special events.

What an experience! I live in Queens and even though there are great restaurants here, Thalassa is in a league of its own. One of the most beautiful bars around and we ended up staying at the bar for dinner as well.

One of the best authentic seafood restaurants in the city. As soon as you walk in you feel the vibe and the bar area alone will keep you coming back. Service is top notch.
