There's a lot to like at Tu Casa in Astoria, a Spanish restaurant that specializes in Peruvian cuisine. Located in the heart of Astoria's shopping district, Steinway street, Tu Casa has a very hip and cool vibe going for it and the menu goes far beyond the typical chorizo, rice and beans selections that you will find at similar style restaurants.
The small bar near the front is a gathering place for the after work crowd who can't get enough of the fruity and refreshing sangria. It's a friendly place to go and have a drink with your friends and indulge in some of the kitchen's scrumptious appetizers. Foodies will love the Latin fusion food which blends the best of several Central and South America's most popular dishes.
Bar bites and appetizers include Tostones, which are addicting crispy green plantains, Yuca hervida, (steamed cassava with onions), Maduros,(sweet plantains) as well as the Peruvian staple, boiled potatoes in cheese sauce. Very tasty and not at all as heavy as it sounds. Various chicken dishes take center stage at Tu Casa. You can order your chicken stewed, Caribbean style with Tostones or, yes, even with rice and beans. The best way to enjoy your Pollo, though, is the signature Tu Casa way, "Saltado" which consists of sliced chicken, sauteed with onions, tomatoes and cilantro. Another satisfying and tasty dish is the Pernil with moro rice. They also do a nice fried Pork chops platter.
The kitchen excels at turning out some superb Marisco (seafood) dishes. You can't go wrong with either the Corvina Sudada (steamed sea trout) in a white wine sauce or the Camarones al Ajillo, which is a generous portion of shrimp sautéed in a light garlic sauce. The bar carries a surprisingly well curated wine list with some excellent domestic and imported wines. more over, the selections go well with the type of food being served. Look, this isn't Becco or the 21 club, but they don't pretend to be, which is nice in and of itself. There are no pretensions here. Just good solid food, a warm atmosphere and a staff that wants you to leave happy and satisfied. Who could ask for more ?
