Culture Espresso, New York City
It's great to be able to support an independent, locally owned business while also enjoying a superior cup of coffee and indulgent baked goods. Get your Java fix on, kick back and relax at Culture Espresso, the barista is your best friend. Knowledgeable and genuine, the baristas are trained in the art of making a great cup of coffee. The selection is carefully curated.
The owners of Culture Espresso partner up with boutique artisan roasters from all over the country like Heart Roasters out of Portland, Oregon. The good thing here is that there's always a new blend to try in addition to your regular favorites.
Nothing goes better with a cup of Joe than one of Culture Espresso's signature chocolate chip and oatmeal cranberry cookies that are baked in-house. Whatever sips you crave, Culture Espresso will pour them for you, from Macchiato, Lattes, Cortado and the always popular Cappuccino. Most sips are available iced as well, like the incredible iced soy latte.
The espresso drinks are creamy and rich and, by the way, the dunking of cookies is permitted. Best dunks are the coffees and hot lattes, by far. Just pair your cup up with a donut, cookie or chocolate croissant and you are good to go.
Culture Espresso has a very artsy vibe going for it. The place is not that big but there is limited seating and free WiFi is also provided. You'll love the long communal table located in the middle of the room directly under the gorgeous chandelier. They also have a really cool and infinitely more spacious sister coffee bar, Culture 36, that you should check out.
Located at 247 West 36th Street, in the heart of the Garment District, Culture 36 has a ton of seating, free WiFi and the same addicting fresh baked, chewey cookies that you love at the original location.

B Cup Cafe, New York City
In the neighborhood that has been famous for generations for its eclectic art, music and Bohemian lifestyle, the B Cup Cafe really stands out. Located at the corner of an otherwise quiet, nondescript street, B Cup Cafe is a colorful tribute to the hippie culture of the '60s. Psychedelic artwork adorns the front entrance, and once you are inside the visual collage of styles and colors continues to impress.
The coffee bar and pastry display case are very 2015. But the bare brick walls, funky furniture and wall paintings recall the East Village of Lou Reed and the Fillmore East.
The owners of B Cup fell in love with the East Village when they first moved to the City. They wanted to give something back to the neighborhood by opening a coffee bar where neighbors could gather, sip a brew and mingle. On their cute and very artsy website, the owners have made their feelings known in a simple and elegant fashion: "We want to make this cafe a place that you'll feel good coming to, just as we feel about all of you being here."
B Cup's coffee is a to-die-for blend, as is the Cappuccino, Americano and Red Eye. They have a pretty nifty selection of sandwiches as well. Sweet finishes for your meal or cup of coffee include the Big Oreo, the Tahini cookie, Mud cake and a Vegan Ginger Molasses dessert.

Blue Bottle, New York City
Gleaming, high tech and modern, Blue Bottle coffee bar is just around the corner from the World famous Rockefeller Center Skating Rink. It is a cozy, comforting space that serves as an oasis of coffee and calm for everyone from administrative assistants, young professionals and tourists to high powered NBC executives. The coffee lovers community is alive and well at Blue Bottle.
They serve various and intriguing blends, as well as single origin espressi that changes with the seasons on two La Marzocco Strada MP espresso machines. Blue Bottle is extremely careful who they source their coffee beans from. One of the producers who they are currently working with is the Fazenda Ambiental Fortaleza, in Brazil.
There's a nice little story behind the Blue Bottle name and logo. It involves a brave Polish soldier who became a hero during the Turkish Army's siege of Vienna back in 1683. Franz George Kolshitsky was asked by the desperate Viennese city officials to go through enemy lines and get a message to the Polish army, who were advancing on the Turkish positions. Franz, who spoke both Turkish and Arabic, disguised himself as a Turkish soldier and snuck out of Vienna in the dead of night.
After several close calls, the brave Franz finally made it to the campsite of the Polish army. With the valuable information that Franz provided, the Poles were able to engage and defeat the Turks. Leaving in haste, the Turks abandoned everything they'd brought with them, weapons, tents, wagons, camels, provisions as well as bags of beans. The Viennese thought the beans were camel feed, but Franz, who had lived for years in Arabia, knew better.
These dark, odd-looking objects were coffee beans. Using the money bestowed on him by the Mayor of Vienna, Franz Kolshilsky bought every last bag of the Turk's coffee and opened the first coffee house in Central Europe, the Blue Bottle.
At Blue Bottle Cafe, flavors include Hayes Valley Espresso, Regulo De Rivas and Rwanda Nyanza Kirezi.

Founded in Greenpoint Brooklyn, Grumpy still roasts their beans at that location. Harper's Bazaar voted Cafe Grumpy's Chelsea location as one of the chicest coffee shops in New York. Each of Grumpy's locations has its own personality and traits. The Fashion District cafe, which opened in the summer of 2013, is housed in an iconic art deco building.

Ost Cafe is so much more than just a really cool coffee bar. In addition to outstanding coffee, espresso drinks and tea, Ost Cafe specializes in craft beers, Central European wines, sandwiches, salads, breakfast pastries and desserts.
Special events like Drink and Draw, along with the after dark Concert Series, bring both hipsters and families alike through the doors. Hosted by a local artist, Drink and Draw encourages would be Van Gough's, to pick up a pencil and paper and make some magic happen, all while enjoying a great Latte.
Ost's concert series brings a host of talented up-and-coming performers to their stage. Recent performances have included pop singer Amanda Fama, tunesmith Bay Brian, and jazz guitarist Andrew Forman.
Ost Cafe has a very relaxed feel to it and is the perfect European-like casual but fun date spot. Even the pastries are traditional from Central and Eastern Europe. It's worth making the trip from wherever you live.
