Nitu Pilania's Art

Nitu Art Studio - Where the magical mythology and traditions of India come to life.

When the nation of India comes to mind, one conjures up visions of sprawling, opulent palaces like the Taj Mahal; breath-taking natural vistas ranging from imposing mountains and green jungles to flowing acres of farmland; not to mention the lavish, colorful wedding ceremonies that are rooted in centuries of tradition.

Boasting world figures such as Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi, India's diverse population is all about kindness and hospitality, making strangers feel welcome. And let's not forget about their work ethic and talent for innovation, which has made India an economic powerhouse on the global stage.

There are, indeed, a multitude of layers to the culture of India. If you think that you know what India is all about, from just sampling their delightful cuisine at a local restaurant or watching a documentary on the Travel Channel; well, think again!

One thing is for sure; if you are lucky enough to be able to experience India in person, you will never be bored.

However, should a trip to India not be in your plans right now, why not explore the traditions of India through the eyes of artist extraordinaire Nitu Pilania Dahla, founder of Nitu Art Studio?

Born and raised in the small village of Walser, which is located in the district of Haryana, Nitu now calls Iselin, New Jersey home. She resides there with her loving and supportive husband Sumit and their two adorable children.

Nitu absolutely loved growing up amidst the tranquil surroundings of Walser, where her family farmed the land. Nitu's father strongly believed in gender equality and encouraged his daughter to think that she could accomplish just about anything that she set her mind to.

Ms. Pilania described her idyllic childhood years in India as "...being part of a vibrant, energetic carnival. India is a bold and unabashed country where you can experience something new every day of your life. It's a land of art, science, philosophy and religion."

The canvas that Nitu paints most definitely reflects the artist's feelings about her native country.

"Art is something that has fascinated me since childhood. I used to draw pictures of the different animals that roamed our farmland." She still incorporates images of forest creatures, especially elephants and tigers, into her work.

Nitu continued to draw and paint during her formative years. But, as she grew older, Nitu kind of lost touch with her artwork, attending university where she earned a Bachelor's Degree in Commerce. She then entered the fashion industry, working there for many years.

But, in 2011, Nitu's life changed. Her husband Sumit, who worked in IT for tech Mahindra, was transferred from India to California. In 2017, the family relocated once again, this time to New Jersey.

"After moving to America, most of my time was spent taking care of my family. But, I also rediscovered my passion for art. In 2019, when my younger child started pre-school, I started to have a little more time for myself and commenced to polish up my painting skills." She hasn't looked back since then.

Nitu is rather proud of the fact that she is self-taught with no real formal training as an artist. It goes without saying that a great deal of trial and error formed part of the journey that eventually led to Nitu becoming the artist that she is today.

"It's not easy, but being self-taught has helped me to grow both as a person and as an artist. I learn something new with each passing day. And I love to experiment. That propels my creativity."

We wondered what inspired Nitu to put brush to canvas. She did not have to ponder long to give us an answer.

"The magic of Indian mythology, epic tales and religious motifs inspire me immensely. Since childhood, kids in India LOVE to watch mythological epic dramas on TV

like Mahabharata and Ramayana. I was no exception. Our parents and grandparents taught us how to pray in temples as well as how to observe the ritual of fasting. India taught me benevolence, patience and compassion. I hope that those qualities shine through in my art."
