Frozen yogurt has been around since the 1970s but really took off in the 80s and early 90s. After a while, perhaps due to oversaturation of the marketplace, consumer demand leveled off. But Froyo would not be off the national radar screen for long.

John Wudel invented various live probiotic powder-based mixes that took the preparation of frozen yogurt to the next level. He also pioneered the use of alternative sweeteners that made a huge impact on the frozen dessert business. By 2006-2007, Froyo was once again satisfying America's cravings for something cold, delicious and different. Whether you purchased it at the local supermarket or a store like Pink Berry, frozen yogurt was all the rage once again.

Most traditionalists make their Froyo tart or extra-tart to stay true to the original recipe. Other retailers and companies use a process that makes the yogurt taste smoother, like icecream or custard. Some stores now offer consumers both taste options. You can go classic or smooth as silk.
