Sabun by the bay

Small batch soaps that are better for your skin, brought to you by Mother Nature.

When it comes time to enjoy an indulgent bath, a relaxing shower or even washing one's hands; picking out just the right soap is not as simple as it may sound. Not if you want to protect and nourish your skin while also avoiding the harsh ingredients with hard-to-pronounce names that you'll find all too often in commercial soaps at your local national chain pharmacy. Finding a soap that won't irritate your skin is particularly important if you already suffer from issues such as sensitive skin or eczema. Constantly searching the internet or walking through the soap aisle at the supermarket, on the hunt for just the RIGHT bar of soap, can be a frustrating and time-consuming experience. But, it doesn't have to be that way! The secret is knowing just where to look! If you're determined to upgrade your soap experience then look no further than Sabun By the Bay.

Founded by Yesim Ozen in May of 2020, Sabun By The Bay is a brand that offers a diverse array of hand-crafted soaps, bath and body products, and eco-friendly accessories. Re-discover what me-time is really all about, as you luxuriate in a bath fueled by one of Yesim's perfectly addicting soaps like sparkling orange, oat milk, and honey, calming lavender swirl, watermelon, ginger, and lemongrass or green tea and honey. These soaps are gentle to the touch, with a luxurious, rich, velvety lather that will leave your skin feeling deeply moisturized. You will feel as though you've been transported to another world.

Sabun By The Bay's unique blend of proprietary ingredients starts with the very best that Mother Nature has to offer. Yesim's soaps are scented with pure essential oils, ( NOT overpowering perfumes), are colored with natural clays, and include locally grown herbs as well as hand-processed organic fruit peels. You might be thinking; it doesn't get any better than that. But, yes, it does! When Sabun By The Bay states that their products are all-natural, they mean just that. You won't find any off-putting toxins, harmful chemicals, preservatives, or any bleaching and foaming agents here.

The brand's premium soaps are thankfully made the old-fashioned way together with a few contemporary and very innovative planet-friendly twists and touches. Yesim proudly utilizes the cold process method. This technique requires quite a lot of preparation and a minimum of 4 to 6 weeks of curing time , in order to ensure the highest quality and preserve the therapeutic benefits of the botanical ingredients that are being used. Yesim takes a great deal of pride in creating sustainable, zero-waste products. Even her packaging is eco-friendly.

Yesim's background is as interesting as her soaps. Born and raised in Turkey, Yesim traveled extensively as a child and teenager. Coming to the United States to visit a friend, Yesim fell in love with America and decided to stay, doing an MBA in finance. She's been living in Astoria since 2004 and absolutely adores the friendly neighborhood vibe, the cafes and restaurants and the fact that Astoria is close to Manhattan.

Sabun By The Bay was born during the height of covid. But, we'll let Yesim take up the story from here. " I was working as a financial controller for a fashion company when the pandemic hit. During lockdown, I found time to teach myself the art of soap making, which is something that I had always wanted to do. "

Prior to the pandemic, Yesim started a hobby of collecting bars of soap from all of the different countries she visited over the years. These aromatic souvenirs of her travels inspired Yesim to get the party started. " I researched the soap-making process, bought molds, and made plant-based oil-infused ingredients including oatmeal, olive oil, annatto seeds, Himalayan rhubarb, and, yes, even coffee". The coffee comes from her favorite cafe in Astoria, Balancero, which is on 37th Street, just off 31st Avenue.

Continuing on, Yesim told Aplez.com that..." I wasn't content simply to craft a plain bar of soap. I wanted to create some intriguing and colorful designs that would capture people's imagination. "I enjoy challenging myself. During lockdown, I was at our house out on Long Island and the Lilacs were in full bloom. So, my very first soap, Lilac Bloom was born. I infused lilac flowers into my soap and decorated the top of the bar with little Lilac petals. Sabun is soap in Turkish and, at the time, I was right by the Bay, so I called my brand Sabun By The Bay. "

Yesim's passion for helping those with sensitive skin stems back to her childhood years when she was dealing with eczema. " My mom took me to a dermatologist and we found out that it was the ink from books and newspapers that was causing a bad reaction to my skin. The problem took a long time to heal even though I used a medical lotion bar of soap from the local pharmacy."

Olive oil is one of the main ingredients in Sabun By The Bay's line of soaps. But, depending on the bar, you will also find coconut oil, avocado oil, almond oil, shea butter, cocoa butter, and aloe butter. What many people don't realize ( and they should), Yesim told Aplez.com , is that various types of oil provide different benefits to one's skin such as being rich in Vitamin E, or hydrating , smoothing and softening dry skin. Other oils have been found to have anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties.

The designs on Sabun By The Bay's soaps are Instagram-worthy. The colours totally pop. And, what makes these artisanal soaps even more special is that each and every design is captured from real life. The dolphins and ocean waves bar was inspired by the time that Yesim was on a boat cruise and actually saw dolphins jumping out of the water. Another soap's inspiration came from a visit to the local botanical garden when Yesim saw tiny succulents under rose bushes. The founder's strawberry and chocolate soap ( which looks good enough to eat, but, PLEASE don't ), is based on her favorite pastry at Balancero coffee cafe; a croissant filled with Nutella and fresh strawberries.

In addition to ordering soap for personal use in your bathroom and kitchen, keep in mind that Sabun By The Bay is a fantastic GIFT resource for those hard-to-please friends and relatives. They will LOVE the personal touch that Yesim provides when crafting a gift order. Yesim does custom-made soap for any occasion whether it's a birthday, bridal reception, or even a teacher's appreciation day. This past May, Sabun By The Bay even had the honour of crafting custom-made soaps that were included in a goody bag for all guests who attended a fashion show in Brooklyn. Special order customers may request their preferences with regard to the color and fragrance of the soap. Yesim will then discuss the details with her client and toss in a few suggestions, as well. Besides being a talented artisan crafter, Yesim is quite personable and a fantastic listener.

During the Summer months, you can connect with Yesim, in-person at various festivals and markets locally and out on Long Island. On a case-by-case basis, Yesim is also happy to do local delivery by meeting the client at a mutually convenient place like a coffee shop. Currently, Sabun By The Bay has a very attractive welcoming 10% discount offer AND a free shipping deal for orders over fifty dollars. There's no reason to delay placing an order at all.

While checking out Yesim's extremely professional and informative website, take a close look at some of her other, non-soap products. " I wanted to diversify my better-for-you product line" explained Yesim, " so I added more goodies including natural skin care items, hand lotion bars, clay face masks,anti-aging eye cream and a very special wild pistachio oil that I literally brought over from Turkey last Summer, in my suitcase !"
