KX Burger and Beyond - Astoria, Queens

KX Burger and Beyond is dedicated to giving you Xtra Kreative burgers - and they DO mean business. It's not just a marketing slogan at this small but cute eatery that all-American staple, the Hamburger, reigns supreme. And it does so with a delicious difference! The portions are huge, there is tremendous variety and the meat served is as fresh as can be. You can taste and see the difference between a KX Burger and a typical dried-out patty from a fast food chain. Believe us when we say, you don't want to go there. Whether you are on the run and want to take your burger home to savor or you're in the mood for a sit-down meal, make KX Burger and Beyond your destination of choice.

This burger cafe is located at the tail end of bustling Ditmars Blvd. It is not far at all from Astoria Park. So, why not order ahead and pick up a picnic lunch on the way to the park or, better yet, spend a relaxing hour or so at KX Burger and beyond, after taking a walk amidst the greenery. The inside of KX Burger is clean, with a few places to sit and they have a very nice outdoor seating area crowned by red umbrellas providing shade for the tables.

We know that you're curious as to what KX's menu is all about, so let us get to their enticing menu. One of their signature offerings is The Big Bang, which consists of an eight-ounce beef patty that's topped with green leaf lettuce, sautéed mushrooms, a slice of avocado, bell peppers, Monterey Jack cheese and a schmear of spicy chipotle mayo. Next up is The Bad Boy. Be forewarned, no matter how hungry you are, you just may not be able to finish this one. Standing way tall, this veritable meal in a brioche bun contains a 16-ounce double patty, lots of sharp cheddar, onions galore, a slew of pickle chips, lettuce and BBQ sauce. Then there's the Mac Attack Burger. Throw caution to the wind with this burger and simply enjoy! You can worry about your diet later. One of KX's succulent beef patties is crowned with Applewood smoked bacon, crisp lettuce, a thick slice of tomato and a mound of their creamy macaroni and cheese. Oh Yeah !!!! On a somewhat more refined level, elevate your taste buds with the eye-catching Gold Burger. Both the beef patty and brioche bun are covered in edible 24K gold leaves. Now, this is truly a hamburger that is made for Instagram and one that you'd expect to find at a pricy, high-end Manhattan restaurant. The Gold Burger's fixings include caramelized onions, velveeta cheese ( so much it just runs onto the plate ), and white truffle mayo. To seal the deal, your burger is served with truffle fries.

Have an affinity for chicken? Don't we all! Well, take a break from beef and indulge in My Blues Chick, a buttermilk-soaked fried chicken patty topped with blue cheese, tomatoes, mustard and mayo. It's served on a warm and toasty pretzel bun and comes with shoestring fries. In addition to a few different varieties of French fries, the kitchen offers some very refreshing salads to complement your burger, including a Molti Bene Kale Caesar.

Compton's Sandwich Shop - Astoria, Queens

Known for its menu of super creative and mouth-watering sandwich combinations, Compton's does not come up short when it comes to burgers. Founder Alex Compton and his team know exactly how to transform a basic mound of beef into something you'll keep coming back for. The first Compton's opened its doors in Long Island City in 2018. A couple of years ago, Alex decided to give things a whirl in Astoria, opening up a Ditmars location on 23rd Avenue. Not quite as famous as its neighbor, Ditmars Blvd, 23rd Avenue, nonetheless, can lay claim to hosting an interesting variety of businesses, including Telly's Taverna, the legendary Stamatis Restaurant, NY Dental, Metropolis Realty and, The Bonnie and Figlia.

The motto at Compton's is " Everybody Eats ". This is Alex Compton's way of saying that no one goes home hungry; a philosophy that applies to more than just food. Here, you are greeted with genuine warmth and a smile. There is always tap your toes music playing in the background and a cool selection of board games that you can pass the time with while you nosh away. By the way, in addition to their two Queens locations, Compton's also has outposts in Greenpoint, Brooklyn and Cliffside Park, New Jersey. They do get around. Attention to detail is a specialty at Compton's, so much so that they make all of their condiments in-house, including a variety of aiolis ( lime, horseradish, red pepper ), and ketchup. The bread that is used to enhance their burgers and sandwiches is fresh-baked from a family recipe.

The Rodeo Burger is made with an Angus beef patty and they are NOT shy about the amount of American cheese, bacon strips and onion rings that they top the meat with. And let's not forget the tangy BBQ sauce. The hamburger maestros also turn out a Classic Burger, with plenty of cheese, lettuce and tomato, inside a pita. The awesome Volcano Burger brings together both a beef patty and some chopped steak along with Cheese Wiz and caramelized onions, all on a toasted bun. The gigantic Backyard Burger is served on a semolina, seeded hero and it consists of a thick mound of beef, cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato and made-from-scratch ketchup. Seeing as how we're in Astoria, home to one of the largest Greek populations in the world, it is only fitting that Compton's features a Mediterranean Burger on the menu. You won't miss the beef on this one since your " burger" is an honest-to-goodness falafel patty and the toppings include feta cheese, chopped onions, tomato, tzatziki and a small arugula salad dressed with EVOO. Side accompaniments range from fresh-made Mozzarella Sticks with house vodka sauce for dipping to Corn Nuggets, Tater Tots, a healthy and divine Beet Salad, as well as a lovely Caprese Salad.

Halsey's - Astoria, Queens

This cozy pub is your go-to spot for a feel-good experience in the heart of Astoria. Halsey's is all about community; bringing locals together over an ice-cold glass of beer, innovative cocktails and a vibrant menu. The pub is named after the "father of Astoria," Stephen A. Halsey. A tireless worker, Halsey became a wealthy fur trader who ended up purchasing a large plot of land bordering the East River known as Hallett's Cove. Mr. Halsey incorporated the village in 1839 and changed the name to Astoria, in honor of his mentor John Jacob Astor.

Halsey's Happy Hour takes place weekdays from four until seven PM. It's really good stuff. The only drawback is that they don't have burgers on the happy hour menu. But they most certainly DO have those luscious patties on the a la carte menu. So, worry not! Happy Hour cocktails come in at ten bucks apiece, including a fabulous Old Fashioned, Paloma, Sangria and a bone-chilling Frozen margarita. You can get a frosty glass of craft beer for only $6, while a mere seven dollars buys you a glass of vino, red or white.

The Handhelds portion of the menu features the kitchen's signature Halsey's Burger and it's a good one! Dripping with juices, this medium-rare burger is topped with Gouda cheese, bacon jam and crispy onions. You definitely will want to look into the meaty and mighty Double Smash burger. See if you're appetites are big enough to handle this monstrosity consisting of not one but two patties, American cheese, fried pickles, lettuce, tomato, a slice of onion and the chef's special sauce. We do not know what's in this sauce, but it sure tastes good. There's also an intriguing Build-Your-Own-Burger option that allows you to get creative and add on various toppings such as a fried egg, an avocado slice, caramelized onions, jalapenos, or cheese curds. The base toppings are, of course, lettuce, tomato and pickles.

The kitchen even has a Brunch Burger that is certain to be your new favorite wake-up call. It's a real mouthful with ingredients like a premium beef patty, one egg your way, bacon, Taylor ham, American cheese and an otherworldly sriracha ranch dressing. Halsey's, by the way, has a nifty $28 Bottomless Brunch going on the weekend, which entitles you to ninety marvelous minutes of unlimited select cocktails, Bloody Marys, Mimosas, beer, or house wine. Getting back to the regular men, they have some sides that are perfect to pair up with your burger, such as Roasted Cauliflower with chickpeas, Mac and Cheese Wontons in a bechamel sauce and Gravy Tots loaded with sausage gravy, cherry peppers, cheese curds and a touch of Rosemary seasoning.

Bareburger - Astoria, Queens

One really cannot do an article about burgers in Astoria without mentioning the granddaddy of them all, Bareburger. Established in 2009, from the very beginning, Bareburger has set trends rather than followed them and that has led to resounding success. At Bareburger, the team prides itself on crafting organic, tasty and eco-friendly burgers. From the basic to the exotic, they've got it all at Bareburger. Committed to sustainable practices, Bareburger is a restaurant where flavor meets responsibility. All of the beef that Barburger sources is grass-fed and humanely treated. The restaurant works with brands such as Tractor Beverage Company (organic lemonades and iced teas), Armored Fresh (vegan oat milk cheddar ), and Blue Marble ( vegan coconut ice cream, organic chocolate and vanilla ice cream). Bareburger's mission is to leave an eco-conscious mark on your palate and our planet. And have a ton of fun while doing so.

Bareburger's original flagship location still has a very comfy, rustic, family-friendly vibe to it. The service is as caring as ever. Specials include an Everyday happy Hour, noon to seven PM, featuring three-dollar Miller High Lifes, $6 Mules and $9 Margaritas. If you have kids, you've got to check out Sundae Funday. Enjoy one-dollar sundaes all day long with the purchase of any hamburger or sandwich. Also on offer is a wonderful $1 Combo Lunch Special, Monday to Friday from noon until 3 PM. Make any burger or sandwich a combo for only a buck. This deal includes a side of your choice and a fountain drink.

Burgers come in either a 4-oz. or 8-oz. Wagyu beef blend patty. They are served on your choice of a brioche, multi-grain sprout,t or flaxseed keto bun, or you may opt for either a collard green or spinach wrap. The National is one of their most popular burgers and it's easy to see why with ingredients such as organic, grass-fed beef, uncured bacon, sharp farm-style cheddar, a slice of red onion and pickled green tomato. Not far behind in terms of demand is the Top-Shelf Super Duper. Your Wagyu beef patty is crowned with baby Swiss, a mound of Buffalo-style frizzled onions, together with a side of sweet and spicy pickles. The Buckaroo is a meat-lover's dream burger with both a beef patty AND slow-smoked pastrami along with Swiss cheese, grilled onions, a tomato slice and Bareburger's very delectable Wham Bam sauce. The Spicy Smash Burger features a blend of beef from the noted artisan butcher Pat LaFrieda with habanero pepper jack cheese, tri-color jalapenos, a Vidalia onion slice and spicy mayo. It's served on a warm potato bun.

Moving along on the menu, we now come to those exotic options we mentioned a bit earlier. Sweet Bison Blues is made with all-natural bison meat and the other ingredients are uncured bacon, aged blue cheese, caramelized onions and a bacon-bourbon jam. Elk meat is also available in burger patty form. Come on, be a little adventurous. The restaurant also highlights a selection of Impossible Burgers. The Standard Vegan's ingredients are impossible "beef", oat milk cheddar "cheese", cooked onions, and house garlic aioli and ketchup. This impossibly tasty burger is sided up with a dill pickle. My Sunshine consists of an outrageous patty made with sweet potato, kale and wild rice and it's topped with organic kale, a slice of cucumber, a Roma tomato and Green Goddess dressing.

Be sure to order up one of their thick, delicious shakes that are made with your choice of organic milk or oat milk. There are several addicting flavors to choose from, but one you should not ignore is the Salted Caramel, Banana and Peanut Butter Shake served with fresh whipped cream.

SLDR Burger Bar - Astoria, Queens

Known for their super creative sliders and desserts, SLDR Burger Bar looks like something out of the future. No doubt, Captain Kirk and his crew or the Jetsons would be very comfortable in these surroundings. Orange, red and yellow dominate the color scheme here and the surroundings could pass for the " break room " on a spaceship. Yes, it's that bizarre and way cool! They even have a self-serve beer tap station where you can fill up a SLDR mug with your choice of brews. However, you HAVE to show your ID first. Always remember to drink responsibly.

When you order, there are a multitude of choices available. Each slider is two ounces of Angus beef, and you also have the option to order a regular-sized 8-oz... hamburger. It's up to you. The Greek Freak slider is one of their tastiest burgers. Your beef patty is covered in an olive spread with feta crumbles and tomato. The Cool Ranch slider contains bacon, lettuce, tomato and a nacho fondue sauce. Never heard of that one before. But that's exactly why you should try SLDR! Another bucket-list slider is the JD. The basic toppings of bacon, lettuce and tomato are augmented by white cheddar and Jack Daniel's sauce. Bao Town is a patty made with slow-cooked pork belly, caramelized onions, lettuce, sesame seeds and fresh cilantro. Now, do we have your attention? If not, read about The Garden, a slider or an eight-ounce patty that's made with Quinoa, tomato, lettuce, orange zest and ginger sauce. Turkey burgers are also on the menu.

SLDR Burger Bar is home to their soon-to-be-famous Mac and Cheese cups, available in six or 12-ounce servings. Trust us, you have never, ever had anything like this! The Mac and Cheese is filled with parmesan, feta and mozzarella cheese as well as breadcrumbs and topped with parsley. Hey, gotta get a little green in there, right? For dessert, we just know that you'll satisfy your sweet tooth with some soft-serve ice cream. You can enjoy your soft serve chocolate, vanilla, or strawberry ice cream in either a flat-bottom cake cone or a cup that comes with a color-changing spoon. Toppings include M&M's, Oreo minis, Whoppers and Reese's Pieces. You will feel like a kid again and be more than ready to face the day!
