Get your weekly pizza-fix in the trendy neighborhoods of Chelsea and the Meatpacking District where you will find some of the best pizza in the city.

Pizza has come into its own as a gourmet dish that food critics and foodies no longer frown at. Some very special gourmet pies have become standard menu items at even the most high-end Italian restaurants.

Tappo - Chelsea, NYC

Like your pizza crust on the thin and lighter side?  Well, the pizza-maestros at Tappo got you covered. Their crust is super thin and the guys and gals in the kitchen really know how to put together a pie that's a cut above the rest.

The restaurant has a nice, comfy ambiance. The decor is vintage, almost turn of the century, like an old school Trattoria. Maybe your great-grandparents enjoyed their pizza in a similar environment.

Tappo 1
But, there's also a few contemporary touches here, as well. It all makes for some interesting surroundings to look at while you enjoy your pizza.
When Summer arrives, Tappo sets up a cute little sidewalk cafe which adds a great deal to your overall dining experience.

House pies range from the savory meatball classic and giardino which is topped with a harvest of fresh veggies to  the shroomtown which consists of marinara sauce, mozzarella, Portobello, shiitake and button mushrooms as well as white truffle oil.
Their signature pie , ,though , is the Tres Fuegos. This wildly popular pizza is topped with spicy marinara sauce, manchego cheese, crumbled spicy chorizo sausage, cilantro and sauteed shrimp.

Tappo 2
You can also do pizza your way by ordering one of their custom pies. Custom pizza can be made with nine grain organic crust, if so desired.

Salads go great with pizza and all that nice greenery does help alleviate any culinary guilt trip you may be having.
Premium salads include the kale and manchego , the quinoa and avocado bowl as well as the spinach salad.

Company - Chelsea, NYC

The craft of artisanal pizza is taken to another level entirely when you  dine at Company, a restaurant founded by  James Beard award winner Jim Lahey .

A very interesting Renaissance man, Jim Lahey studied sculpture before moving to Italy in order to learn the art of bread baking.

CompanyRestaurant
After returning to new York in 1994, Jim opened the Sullivan Street Bakery in Soho, bringing the craft of small batch bread baking to America.  Before too long, Jim won acclaim from neighborhood residents and foodies across the city for his Roman-style pizza, authentic Italian pastries and cookies.

Having mastered one culinary challenge after another, jim felt that it was time to open his own restaurant , a place where finely crafted breads and pizza would take center-stage on the menu.
Jim teamed up with noted restaurateur Phil Suarez and Jean-Georges Vongerichten to open Co. ( company),  in 2009. Jim and his team are credited with inspiring the trend of wood-fired pizza restaurants where the pies are made with slow-fermented dough and topped with seasonal, market-driven ingredients.
CompanyRestaurant2

The decor here is sleek, sexy and modern; as you would expect from an owner who lived in Italy for many years.

The pizza at Company ranges from the traditional to out of the box. But, they are all molto bene.
Jim's signature pie is the Italiana which is made up of mortadella, sopressata, tomatoes, fermented chili, red onions, oregano mozzarella, provolone, arugula, sesame seeds and a touch of red wine vinegar.

The Cauliflower pizza consists of roasted cauliflower, bechamel, parmesan cheese, mozzarella, green olives, garlic, chili and parsley. The ham and cheese  features pecorino and gruyere cheese along with mozzarella, mounds of prosciutto and caraway. Even the more traditional offerings have Jim's own particular spin on them.
Veal meatballs and caramelized onions decorate the classic "meatball" pie.

CompanyRestaurant3
By all means, have an Italian inspired cocktail along with your pizza! The West Side Highway is a heady blend of maurin dry vermouth, cappelletti and Prosecco with an orange twist. Company has a terrific list of whites, reds and sparkling wines ,just as you would find in an Italian  enoteca .
Company also offers some great house-made soda. Flavors include blood orange,  passion fruit and ginger-yuzu. Hey, great pizza deserves an equally superior drink to wash it down with.

L'Amico - Chelsea, NYC

The neighborhood buzz is off the charts where this casual but chic Italian dining spot is concerned. Located in the trendy boutique Eventi Hotel, L'Amico is all about friends, family, celebrating and great food. It doesn't get any better than this!

The culinary master mind behind  L'Amico is Executive chef Laurent Tourondel, so you know that you're in for something really special.

lAmico 1
Chef Laurent's cooking is inspired by the time that he spent by his Italian grandmother's side, watching as she whipped up Sunday dinner like a magician. Using veggies and herbs from the family garden as well as beef and poultry from a nearby farm, grandma could make even the simplest dish taste  memorable.

At L'Amico, Laurent has proudly carried on his grandmother's farm to table tradition, providing his customers with only the freshest, locally sourced ingredients.
One of the main attractions here is the theatrical open kitchen, where you can watch the chef and his team at work. The kitchen is visible, not only throughout the dining room, but to passersby out on the sixth avenue sidewalk. But, visual impact aside; this is only a taste of the treats that will appear on your plate.

Little by little, L'Amico is gaining quite the reputation for delicious wood-fired pizza. Pies like the scrumptious white mushroom, with truffle paste, fontina, taleggio and sage are drawing foodies here like a magnet. The charred kale pizza with gorgonzola, onions and chile de arbol oil is also very popular.
Want to add more than a bit of spice to your life ? Then go for the Soppressata picante pie with tomatoes, mozzarella cheese and a generous sprinkling of Sicilian oregano.
LAmico 2
Pastas are good here, but the menu features some really creative fish and meat dishes that are note-worthy. The succulent skirt steak is accompanied by Parmesan creamed escarole, mushrooms and a delightful Barolo sauce. The  seared scallops flavor is brought out, big-time ,by a rosemary-apple puree, capers and sunchokes.

The Eventi Hotel is a magnificent setting for a restaurant that is as unique as is L'Amico.
