Manhattan and Queens - Private tutoring in French, Spanish and Greek right in the comfort of your own home.
Simply give professional language tutor Karen Jessen a call, and you will be well on your way to opening up a whole new world. Karen is one of the most knowledgeable and sought after language teachers in the city.
Karen's love for learning new languages came from her parents who spoke French and Spanish. Karen cultivated her passion for linguistics all through high school and while attending Ohio Wesleyan College, where her focus was on improving her French. In fact, Karen lived in a French speaking dorm on campus for two years. Many of Karen's roommates had just returned from studying abroad in France.
Upon completing her graduate work, Karen taught for five years before venturing into the corporate world. The corporate life presented Karen with a new set of challenges, but she was definitely up for it. Karen also found that her linguistic skills came in handy when dealing with clients. But, successful as Karen was in corporate America, there was always something about teaching, that she missed.
It was only a matter of time until she returned to her passion in life. There is no such thing as a typical student. Karen's tutoring demographics are anyone, male or female, from 8-80, who has a desire to learn. Karen's clientele is diverse, ranging from stay at home moms, students and blue collar workers to doctors and corporate executives. Couples love taking their French lessons together, so very romantic. After all, French is the language of love. Vive La Langue Francais.
A living and beathing United Nations, Karen teaches Spanish, as well as French. She also is profficent in Greek and German. Karen's next big challenge is to study Danish. "I tailor my lessons to each students' personality and ability." Every student is an individual who must feel comfortable with the process. Grammer and vocabulary takes time. It's not easy. But I want to make the journey as enjoyable as possible. Most of my students are eager to learn but it has to be done at their own pace.
When you schedule a lesson package with Karen, she will be happy to go to your office or home, depending on the distance. Evening and weekend appointments are available for your convenience. A veritable wealth of knowledge, Karen imparted to us some little known facts about linguistics. Learning the mechanics of a new language, is one way to possibly offset or delay the symptoms of dementia in the elderly. When learning a language, the student has to utilize certain parts of the brain and concentrate on remembering many details. However, more studies have to be done on the relationship between language study and dementia, before any solid scientific conclusions can be reached.
What does a busy professional woman like Karen do to relax in the little spare time she has available? Well, a great deal of traveling, cooking and hitting up the foreign film festivals in Manhattan, heads the list. Karen has travelled to France, five times as recently as this past April. On this occasion, Karen toured South Western France. There is an indescribable joy in visiting small towns and villages in remote areas of the country, interacting with the locals and tasting their food.
On her travels, Karen also does her best to pick-up on the intriguing nuances of the local dialects. That's the teacher in her. France is so much more than Paris, as wonderful as the city of lights can be. Once of Karen's most emotionally moving experiences, in quite sometime, was her visit to the beaches in Normandy. The coastline is beautiful and peaceful. But the sad memories of the battles that took place here, during World War II, are never far removed. Karen toured the German Bunkers, which amazingly are still standing after all these years.
When tutoring her students, Karen likes to mix in anecdotes of French History, cultural tidbits as well as share recipes for some of her favorite dishes. A little dose of history and culture can bring any language to life. A seasoned veteran of 9th and 10th grade classrooms, Karen will keep your kids away, for awhile, anyway, from their games, smartphones and tablets.
When she needs to de-stress, Karen hits gyms like the Rock in Ditmars Astoria, near her home. Karen lives by the words-a fit mind and a fit body. Tone up your brain with Karen Jessen's French lessons and prepare to fall in Amour!
