GREAT BRUNCH DISHES and DRINKS in ASTORIA

GREAT BRUNCH DISHES and DRINKS in ASTORIA

With a diversely delicious mix of restaurants and cafes, Astoria is the perfect place to do brunch.

If you already live in the neighborhood then you know the deal. Sure, you have your favorites. But, there are always new places to explore.

And, if you happen to reside elsewhere, that's not a problem. Astoria is convenient to just about everywhere in NYC, with the N and W train waiting to take you into the heart of this foodie's paradise. Not to mention the R line, as well.

With all that it has to offer, from great dining and boutiques to museums and Astoria Park, this neighborhood has the WELCOME MAT rolled out just for you. Astoria is well worth planning an entire day around, with a magnificent brunch as the centerpiece.

Amylos Taverna - Astoria

Beautifully decorated, with polished wood and plants everywhere, Amylos Taverna is all about great food and fun vibes. You'll feel as though you are enjoying your meal at an upscale taverna in the heart of Athens.

Authentic is the key word here; from the genuinely hospitable service and decor to the amazing food. Owned and operated by the Arvanitis family, Amylos Taverna boasts a brunch menu that was created for those foodies who are seeking something a little bit different yet accessible.

And to make things even better, the menu features antibiotic-free meats and natural ingredients with most of the fruits and vegetables having been grown locally.

No brunch is complete without a fantastic cocktail to add to the conviviality, as you relax with friends, family, or your significant other. Lucky for you, the bartenders here most definitely know how to create a magical elixir.

Yes, you can order standard brunch drinks like the infamous Bloody Mary. But, why would you when you can try some of their signature creations such as the watermelon tequila punch, a wonderful passion fruit mojito, or The Dirty Greek. This concoction is a riff on a basic Martini. But, what makes ALL the difference is the garnish; Kalamata olives that are stuffed with Feta cheese.

During brunch, you can mix or match three Bellinis or Mimosas for only twenty dollars. Try getting that kind of value anywhere else!

The only problem that you'll have with the brunch menu is deciding to choose what to eat; there are so many enticing options!

If you are in salad mode, which many of us are during the heat of Summer, then go for either the delicious shrimp and mango salad or the truffle burrata. Blending the best of Italy and Greece, this salad is comprised of fresh truffle mozzarella that's filled with a creamy stracciatella, tomatoes and a divine Feta mousse, all gently covered by a balsamic glaze.

On the sweet side, there is the Amylos French Toast, made with egg-dipped Greek Brioche, clover queen-bee honey and imported sour cherries. Now, you can order avocado toast at just about every brunch spot on earth. However, the chef's signature avocado toast sees a generous layer of mashed avocado dressed with onions, tomatoes, lime juice, EVOO, a poached egg, AND crumbled Feta.

If you love a tasty Croque Madame, then you simply have to try Amylos' take on this French brunch classic. You won't be hungry the rest of the day for sure as this dish consists of a layer of Greek-style mac and cheese, ham, bechamel, truffles and a sunny-side-up egg.

Also available is a very nicely-done classic eggs Benedict, a Greek omelet that features specially-made Greek sausage and a to-die-for Greek burger. Your chargrilled grass-fed beef patty is topped with tzatziki, thinly sliced cucumbers, tomatoes, onions and Feta sauce.

On the side of the restaurant is a very well-appointed outdoor seating section, which, if the weather cooperates, is an ideal spot to do brunch.

Avenue Restobar - Astoria

One of the crown jewels of 30th Avenue's bustling "Restaurant Row", Avenue Restobar has a very modern, hip vibe going for it. With trendy decor and a subdued yet almost theatrical lighting scheme to set the mood, Avenue works as a date spot for brunch or dinner or a meet-up place for friends on the weekend.

They also happen to have one of the most spacious outdoor cafe spaces in the neighborhood. When brunching here, you'll find plenty of bright yellow and orange umbrella-topped tables to protect you from the sun. And a waitstaff that is seriously attentive to your every need. Hey, isn't that why you go out for brunch and dinner; to get spoiled just a little bit?

To amp up the excitement, Avenue is currently offering a bottomless brunch deal that's good on the weekend from 9 in the morning, ( so, you NOW have an excuse to get up early !), until four in the afternoon. For $25 you get ninety glorious minutes of your choice of endless Mimosas, Bellinis, Bloody Marys, Avenue Royales, or their out-of-this-world Sangria.

Brunch starters include Greek fries topped with feta and Tzatziki, flash-fried Calamari rings accompanied by house-made Marinara sauce and a huge but healthy fruit parfait made with Greek yogurt, mangoes, bananas and berries.

At Avenue, you had better come hungry. The portions are generous and all brunch platters are served with your choice of home fries, fresh cut fries, fruit salad, or a house salad.

You'll absolutely adore the Halloumi-infused waffles and crunchy on the outside but juicy on the inside fried chicken. This dish is topped with whipped butter, fig jam and thyme-infused honey syrup. It's a one-of-a-kind taste sensation.

Executive Chef Jose M. Lavariega also makes a savory slow-cooked brisket hash with sunny-up eggs and Ranchero sauce. The blend of runny egg yolk with the ranchero sauce is something you'll remember fondly hours later.

Another great choice is the Avenue club sandwich. The bread can hardly contain all of the grilled chicken, American cheese, bacon, tomatoes and avocado slices that are packed in. Your tongue will be tantalized by the chipotle mayo spread.

Sometimes, eating healthy, especially for brunch, can be a little boring. There is usually not much selection. But, at Avenue, chef Jose likes to bring pizzazz to every type of dish that comes out of his kitchen.

Instagram-worthy, his Kale and Quinoa bowl (gluten-free) is a harvest of roasted red beets, avocado, crumbled goat cheese, grated carrots, radishes, butternut squash and cranberries, all in a light and slightly tangy citrus vinaigrette.

If you wish to order your drinks a la carte, for brunch or dinner; the mixologists here have a very intriguing drink menu.

The Rose lemonade is a refreshing mix of wine, strawberries and lemon juice. Perfect as a wake-up call, instead of coffee, is a long-time brunch fave, The Astor, made with Mezcal, Campari, spicy agave, pineapple and passion fruit. The lovely fruit juices tend to take the edge off of the Mezcal and agave. But, this cocktail's still got a real kick to it.

Selo Restaurant - Astoria

A relatively new establishment, Selo is making big inroads on the local culinary scene. The family that owns Selo believes that life is all about good energy and lots and lots of fun. Food brings people together and creates lasting memories.

At Selo, the owners want to recreate that fabulous feeling of togetherness when the family would gather at grandma's table for an unforgettable feast along with a ton of laughs.

It doesn't matter whether your gram was known as Nonna, Yia-Yia, or Abuelita, food is an international language, evoking the same emotions in us all.

Representative of Astoria's amazing diversity, Selo offers a blend of Croatian and Serbian cuisine with a modern twist. Thrown in some live toe-tapping Balkan music on weekends and you've got yourself a winning formula.

Unless you've traveled to the Balkans recently, you are going to be in uncharted waters when you peruse Selo's menu. But, trust us, it will be more than worth the adventure.

The food is delectable and you are certain to discover your new favorite dish right here.

Ustipci is a traditional fried dough that's a staple in Balkan households. It is served warm and, if you opt for the savory dish, it's served with prosciutto, Serbian bacon and kajmak.

The sweet choice features Nutella and traditional Balkan jam served alongside the

Ustipci.

By the way, in case you were wondering, kajmak is a fresh cheese that is made with milk from sheep, water buffalo, or goats. It is similar in texture to clotted cream but has a rather strong cheesy flavor with a note of sweetness.

A must-try item is a cevapi. These luscious items are grilled, hand-shaped case-less sausages that are made with either minced lamb, veal or beef. They are beyond addicting and can be found in the Croatian Breakfast; two eggs any style, feta cheese and fresh tomatoes.

You can wash your brunch down with a selection of imported Serbian, Bosnian and Croatian beers as well as local craft brews. There's also soda, American coffee and Balkan-style coffee. Don't miss out on that one ! It is strong and very satisfying.

Make your reservation now and Bon Appetit or, as they say in the Balkans "Dobar Tek Prijatno."

The Thirsty Koala - Astoria

No one would dispute the fact that koalas are cute, cuddly and native to the continent of Australia. But, if all you know about the land down under is that and a couple of cheesy lines from a Crocodile Dundee flick you caught on late-night TV, then you are in for one heck of an education when you visit The Thirsty Koala.

Prepare to "put another shrimp (and a whole lot more) on the barbie, mate " when you visit The Thirsty Koala, home to some genuine Aussie hospitality and authentic home cooking.

Chef Katherine, who is also one of the owners, has developed a menu of seasonal dishes that incorporate indigenous Australian ingredients like lemon myrtle, wattle seed and desert oak. Most of the veggies that the chef uses come from the restaurant's very own garden.

The inside of the place is warm and cozy with a gorgeous walnut bar towards the back. Take a seat, chat with the barkeep or your neighbor on the next stool and just unwind from the cares of the day.

A nice glass of imported Aussie Coopers Pale Ale will certainly take the edge off.

As well one of the Koala's creative libations.

One of their most popular cocktails is the Gold Coast Sunrise, which consists of Pomp and Whimsy Gin, Aperol, St. Germaine, mint and fresh, never from a can, pineapple and lime juice.

The eclectic ingredients that can be found in the Koala Summer Mule have a definite wow factor going for them. You'll agree after one sip of this elixir which blends New Zealand 42 below Vodka and Australian ginger beer with blood orange liqueur, house-made Rosemary syrup and a champagne floater.

Brunch is served on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The first seating takes place at 11 AM while the last seating commences at 2:45 PM. Plan accordingly because this restaurant is uber-popular, especially for brunch.

For hearty appetites, the trio of mini Australian meat pies is highly recommended. These savory pies are wrapped up in puff pastry and served with shoestring fries, ketchup and sweet chili sauce.

Another intriguing dish is the chef's signature fritters. They are made with sweet corn, Manchego cheese, onions and jalapenos. The fritters are accompanied by a small mesclun salad with red onions and mango.

In Australia, they refer to breakfast as Brekkie. You'll end up doing that, too, after you finish off a plate of Katherine's indescribably good Hot Cakes. This stack of flapjacks is made with organic Australian lemon myrtle, and ricotta and is topped with fresh berries and made from scratch whipped cream.

The Brekkie Sanga (Aussie slang for a sandwich), contains perfectly made folded eggs, cheddar cheese, applewood bacon or turkey sausage, ketchup and kewpie mayo on a toasted brioche bun. Here's a bit of culinary history for you: kewpie mayo is very popular in Australia and, really, all over the Pacific. This very special mayo, which was invented in Japan back in the 1920s, is made with a touch of oil, vinegar and just the YOLKS of eggs. That's the secret that gives this creamy mayo its yellow color and super-duper flavor.

You can also order Pain Perdu, chef Katherine's version of French Toast. In the Thirsty Koala's kitchen, this brunch classic is made with croissants, fresh seasonal fruit, and bananas and is finished with a heavenly chocolate drizzle.

The Thirsty Koala; is a little bit of Australia, just steps from the N train station. Within these environs, you will exchange the mundane for the exotic.

Botte - Astoria

In a community that has no shortage of Italian restaurants, Botte has managed to carve out an identity all of its own. The founders, Francesco and Valerio, together with chef Antonio Costa are all about celebrating the culinary traditions of Rome.

The charming "look" of this tiny restaurant brings to mind the trattorias and cafes that can be found throughout Italy's capital city. As in Rome, the menu offers a selection of Cicchetti, which are small plates meant to be enjoyed with a nice glass of red or white wine.

In addition to the tables that can be found inside, there is ample seating outdoors.

So, as the Romans like to do, you can people-watch to your heart's content.

Cicchetti selections include Grandma's meatballs in tomato sauce, Roman-style rice balls, eggplant rolls that are stuffed with goat cheese and chives as well as breaded, fried mozzarella in a light Marinara sauce.

You can also indulge in a plate of Cacio e Pepe fries, which are fresh-cut potatoes dusted with pepper and Pecorino Romano cheese.

Brunching hours are Saturday and Sunday, between 12 and 4 PM.

The egg white frittata, with fresh herbs, goat cheese and spinach is above average as is their 10 oz. sirloin steak and eggs any style. The chef's avocado toast plate is quite inventive. A schmear of avocado on toasted Italian bread is topped with cherry tomatoes, a couple of poached eggs and crushed red pepper.

Available only at brunch is the pizza carbonara, which features crispy bacon, black pepper, Parmigiano cheese and eggs. You may also order their stupendous pizza alla vodka, which is made with house-made vodka sauce, fior di latte, basil and fresh mozzarella.

Many of Botte's brunch drinks are specially priced at just $ 8 and $ 11!

Made with premium Ravo Vodka and Botte's secret Bloody Mary mix, you can add, get this, shrimp as a garnish to this cocktail for only three dollars!

The Negroni Sbagliato is composed of Prosecco, Contratto Bitters and red vermouth. In the must-try category is the Raspellini, a refreshing mix of rose champagne, raspberry puree and St. Germain.

Irish whiskey, Amaretto, lemon juice and Amaro Montenegro are the ingredients that make The Day After really shine.
