Newburgh, NY - Top Shopping, Nightlife, and Waterfront Dining Scene

On your next day-trip or weekend getaway to the Hudson Valley, make plans to spend some time in the relatively undiscovered city of Newburgh.

Only seventy miles from the city, Newburgh has undergone quite a Renaissance over the last few years. The real estate market is booming like never before and the foodie scene has never been better.

There are craft breweries, wineries and art galleries all around the vicinity. You can also get in some fabulous shopping at Woodbury Commons, which is well within easy driving distance or a relatively short bus ride.

Newburgh is easy to get to, even if you don't have a car. The Metro-North station is just across the river in Beacon. You can take a very nice, scenic ten-minute ferry ride over to Newburgh if you like!

There is a lot to do and see in and around Newburgh, which was founded way back in 1763 making it one of the oldest towns in New York State.

While we're on the subject of history, you can visit George Washington's headquarters, which is located a short drive from the glittering waterfront.

The waterfront walk, by the way, is home to Newburgh's version of NYC's famed Restaurant Row. Here, you can find a veritable global rainbow of cuisines, ranging from Italian, Greek and Spanish to good old American BBQ.

A diverse city with a large Spanish population, Newburgh has some real culinary gems hidden away in the heart of the city.

Spending the day here is great but in order to give yourself some time to really take in everything that the area has to offer, book a room at one of the nearby charming Bed and Breakfasts or boutique hotels. You'll be glad that you did!

Cena 2000 - Newburgh

Nothing says comfort food like authentic Italian cuisine. There's just something about a heaping plate of spaghetti and meatballs or a dish of baked ziti that evokes warm memories of those unforgettable Sunday dinners at grandma's house.

Cena 2000, one of the most popular restaurants on the gorgeous Newburgh waterfront, gives you the Italian classics that you're craving along with some very modern culinary accents and ingredient blends.

And the atmosphere? Let's just say that, no matter how nice your Nonna's house or apartment was, it would be hard to beat Cena 2000's beautiful outdoor patio and the breathtaking views of the Hudson River and majestic mountains in the distance. It is a veritable picture postcard come to life.

Just sit back, relax and enjoy a glass of red or white as you watch the sailboats glide by.

The interior of the restaurant isn't bad, either. Amidst rustic brick walls and floor to ceiling wood columns that display shelves filled with wine bottles, there's an open kitchen decorated with old-world pots, pans and cooking utensils.

If you grew up in an Italian neighborhood, you'll remember your parents taking you out on your birthday or, perhaps, to celebrate your graduation. The destination was always a restaurant that was beloved by just about every member of your family.

After all, if you are not going to eat home-cooked food, then the experience has to be something special, right?

Well, this is what you can look forward to when you dine at Cena 2000.

The service is courtly and professional without being obtrusive in any way.

When the waiter suggests that you start the evening with an appetizer, listen to his or her suggestions and prepare to indulge in dishes like Tomato and ricotta stuffed eggplant and Insalata D'Aragosta, lobster salad and mixed greens with a divine lemon-mayo dressing.

There is a tremendous amount of variety when it comes to pasta and we're not just talking about tried and true stalwarts like lasagna, either.

The kitchen here is extremely creative. The penne pasta in a ragu of ground veal together with sage and white wine is absolutely scrumptious.

If you are watching what you eat then you can't do any better than the chef's delicious semolina pasta that is dressed in pancetta, onions and peas in a light and tasty cream sauce.

Another soon to be Italian classic is the spinach ravioli that's served in a mushroom puree'. The blend of flavors is unbelievable.

The meat and seafood portion of the menu goes way beyond a plate of meatballs or sausages.

Choose among a juicy shell steak in a brandy and peppercorn sauce, Quail with risotto, rack of lamb and mashed potatoes that are drizzled in white truffle oil or Cena's signature dish, Cacciucco alla Toscana.

This hearty offering is a traditional Tuscan fish stew that is made with a slightly spicy tomato broth. And what better place to enjoy it than right on the water?

Finish up your evening on a high note with a slice of their house-made Ricotta cheesecake together with a glass of Prosecco or ice-cold imported Peroni beer.

Captain Jake's River House - Newburgh

After a day spent cruising on the Hudson or strolling along the scenic Newburgh waterfront esplanade, nothing hits the spot like a nice seafood dinner.

Captain Jake's River House is as close as you'll get to have an authentic New England seafood shack experience, without having to make the long drive up to Boston.

Hey, some folks, ( more than a few actually), contend that chef-owner Bill Ranke does the seafood classics just as good, if not better, than the folks up the coast who say"chowda" instead of chowder!

A Culinary Institute of the America-trained chef, Bill knows a thing or two about bringing out the best in fresh fish.

Chef Ranke's menu and love of the sea were inspired by his Uncle Jake who spent a lifetime fishing and sailing on the waters off the coast of Rhode Island.

The atmosphere is casual but classy. The theme is definitely on the nautical side without going over the top. You'll feel comfortable here.

But on a wonderfully sunny day, who wants to spend their time inside when you can enjoy a meal outdoors, just a few feet from the water, on Captain Jake's expansive covered patio deck. now, that's the life!

According to Captain Jake's website, their goal is to provide a genuine taste of New England amidst idyllic Hudson Valley surroundings. As anyone who has had the pleasure of dining here will tell you, the team at Captain Jake's has more than succeeded.

It's no wonder that they say, "One bite and you'll be hooked."

The fun on your tongue starts with First Bites, the appetizer section of the menu.

Do yourself a solid and order the delectable Clams Oreganato. Forget the frozen version of this dish that you heat up in the microwave, straight from your supermarket's freezer case. The real deal, with a bevy of secret seasonings, is right here, right now at Captain Jake's.

As you would expect, the kitchen turns out a way above average lobster bisque and clam chowda. Order it with the right Boston accent and, who knows, your waiter just might sneak you an extra cup!

The salads are okay, nothing to really get excited about. Except for the house salad. This bowl of mixed greens, carrots, cucumbers and grape tomatoes is can't-miss. What makes it so special? The home-style croutons and creamy scratch made green onion dressing.

The Lobster Corner is filled with crustacean delights. Double your pleasure with twin lobster rolls that are slathered with buttery goodness, lobster mac and cheese or lobster fettuccine that's made with a herb cream sauce.

Of course, you may also order your lobster broiled, steamed or stuffed with all the trimmings. Go ahead and treat yourself. You deserve it.

Had a long day or just don't feel like putting in all of the messy work when it comes to digging that succulent lobster meat out of the shell?

Chef Bill has your solution at hand! Order up a plate of his Lazy Man's Lobster. Delight your palate with chunks of savory lobster meat, seasoned bread crumbs, Sherry wine and drawn butter. Enjoy a 1 1/4 lb. lobster or go big with a two pounder.

Captain Jake's has a seemingly endless array of tempting seafood dishes such as lemon sole Francaise, shrimp scampi over linguine, a superb crab cake wrap that brings the heat with a chipotle remoulade and Atlantic cod that's topped with crab meat and saffron cream sauce.

When darkness descends there's nothing more romantic than a cozy dinner for two with the lights of Beacon glittering in the distance on the other side of the Hudson.

Liberty Street Bistro - Newburgh

While it's not exactly smack dab on the waterfront, Liberty Street Bistro is just a short stroll down to the Hudson River.

That's the perfect opportunity for you to get in some exercise and work up a hearty appetite for lunch, brunch or dinner, as you take in the sights along this historic body of water

It doesn't take much prompting, however, to get that appetite rolling when chef Michael Kelly is in the kitchen. This is a man who has seen and done it all in the restaurant business.

Michael's resume includes some of the best kitchens in NYC including Thomas Keller's Bouchon Bakery and Gordon Ramsey at The London Hotel.

In 2014, Michael was part of the team that opened Batard under the aegis of Markus Glocker. During their first year of operation, Batard received a coveted Michelin Star and in 2015, was awarded the best new restaurant honor from the James Beard Foundation.

Three years ago, chef Michael decided that the time was right to return to his roots in the Hudson Valley and open a restaurant close to home.

Many delicious treats and a lively, hip vibe await you behind the colorful aqua blue, white and purple facade of Liberty Street Bistro.

First of all, they've got a dollar an oyster happy hour that takes place every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 5 until 7 PM, as well as all day on Sunday. Who wouldn't be delirious upon hearing that bit of good news?

But wait, there's more! Let's talk about Pasta Monday's, shall we? Put the big name chain Italian pasta joints in your rearview mirror and eat locally.

Liberty Street Bistro makes it easy with a very inviting $28 two-course or $38 Three-course option to choose from

The line-up of pasta delights changes with the seasons and the mood of the chef. But, rest assured, there's not a bad choice on the menu. On any given day, the menu can feature Pumpkin Tagliatelle, black truffle agnolotti or gnocchi with roasted beets.

There are also special prix-fixe dinners available. One of the chef's more popular appetizers is the scallops with harissa and yogurt. That's a combination that you don't see too often. The tang of the yogurt and bite from the harissa, though, perfectly complements the scallops.

At Liberty Street Bistro, main courses are truly main events, delivering a knockout punch to your palate. Whoa, you did NOT see that one coming!

Anyone who is in the least familiar with the celebrated career of Gordon Ramsey knows that beef wellington is one of his all-time signature dishes.

Chef Michael does Ramsey on better with his juicy pork tenderloin Wellington that is accompanied by creamed spinach. You will also be intrigued by the duck breast roulade that is served with poached prunes and Swiss chard.

Desserts here tend to be on the lighter and more refreshing side rather than something that tastes great but leaves your tummy a little unsettled.. Having said that, though, these are desserts that will satisfy any sweet tooth.

The goat cheese cheesecake that is made with pomegranate and pistachios is indulgent sans all of the guilt.

Tailor-made for the Hudson Valley Fall is chef's delightful, feather-light pumpkin and maple mousse. A bit more of a traditional sweet ending is the heavenly chocolate ganache tart.

Ms Fairfax - Newburgh

At first glance, one isn't quite sure what to make of Ms Fairfax. The room is more than welcoming, with a cool understated ambiance and the smells that waft their way out of the kitchen are intoxicating.

But, you're left wondering; is the prim and proper Ms.Fairfax a trendy bar, hip coffee cafe or a restaurant?

Actually, this cozy place works very well as all of the above. You can expect a fantastic farm to table food with an inventive touch, local craft beers and delicious cocktails as well as awesome cappuccino and both hot and cold coffee drinks.

This establishment has such a well-earned stellar reputation that even industry workers come here on their day off when they're not serving or tending bar elsewhere. That's the best recommendation you could ask for.

Any time of the day is the right time to visit for a strong drink, a caffeine-fueled pick-me-up or for some honest, tasty grub.

However, brunch is extra special here, so carve out a couple of hours from your upcoming weekend and make plans to spend the time at Ms Fairfax.

There are simply so many delectable and tantalizing dishes on the brunch menu, we don't know where to start.

Why not, then, kick off with the kitchen's two signature dishes. First up is the Red Flannel Hash which consists of succulent corned beef hash that is made in-house, red peppers and red roasted potatoes along with a trio of sunny-side up eggs.

Mornings are better with the hearty Mushroom Egg Bake. This taste sensation is served casserole-style with two eggs baked with a generous portion of mushrooms, herbs, along with a touch of cream and garlic. It's served with a toasted baguette and side salad. You'll savor every bite.

Other brunch options range from strawberry French toast, a prosciutto and tomato omelette and an Italian frittata to a surprisingly good and very filling veggie club sandwich that is made with cucumbers, pickled carrots, avocado, beets and Edgwick farms goat cheese.

You won't even care that there's no meat on this sandwich. That would simply distract you from the exotic array of flavors.

Ms Fairfax also just happens to be one great drinking establishment.

The bartenders are at the helm of no less than ten tap lines, each one dispensing a local craft beer. They are ready, willing and able to serve up a glass of premium spirits like Johnnie Walker Black, Denizen Rum and Taconic Local Bourbon.

They'll also be more than happy to mix a cocktail that will hit your sweet spot. Specialties of the house include a classic Martini with a twist, the always popular Manhattan and an excellent Old-Fashioned.

Ms Fairfax's special spirit pairings have made this spot an uber-popular gathering place for both the town of Beacon and city of Newburgh's after-work crowd.

For just five bucks you can float your boat with pairings such as vodka and cranberry, gin and tonic, rum and cola or whiskey with ginger. At that low, low price, you know that you're in for a good time!
